There was y.;ry little interest taken in the Democratic primary at this place last Saturday, there being but one polling place and only 57 votes cast here. It was quite dif ferent in this county a tew years ago. Then a Democratic primary meant a big day and the streets of our town were alive, as it were, with people and money and boo/e were plentiful. But a stranger in town last Saturday would not have known that an election of any kind w 8 being held here—if some one! {bad not informed him of the fact, r See Bruns' *1-H* bargain counter, j Mrs. James Hutchison is visiting { relatives on Dock’s creek. 1’rof. and Mrs. E. Two young men from Catletts burg were in the city today passiug hand bills advertising races to be held at C aliens burg. They had succeeded in disposing of a large \ number of them w hen Chief Daw-1 son interfered wiih their business! and took lb m to the city jail where they were to be given instructions concerning laws ot the city. Later I they were tuk<n out and with the i chief went on the search of a third young man who was in the same ; business in another pail of the city. : Huntington Advertiser, July 2 1 One of the employes of those having the races in charge was ar- ! icste*d and fined by Ccredo’s mayor for tic same offense. We have too | nice a tow n here to have our streets ami lawns “littered up” with adver tisements. If those in charge of' the ( at let ts bu rg races Would spend the same amount of money in news paper advertis ng that they do for posters and tines for the ones they employ in distributing the posters, t ey would obtain better results. Democratic Primaru Nominees. ; There was a very light vote polled all over the county la t Saturday. The people of this county are lie corning extremely independent in their voting and scores of Demo crats did not care to vote in the Primary this year, as they are so jwell pleased that their taxes will he reduced by the Kepublican tax laws that they propose to vote the lie-j publican ticket. I be following persons are the j Democratic nominees; For House ' of Delegate**;C F Harris, of Lincoln District, and Kyron Osborn, of Stonewall District; County Com missioner, I F. Counts, of Granf District ; Couni v Superintendent ot I* ree Schools, L. G. Sansom, of Union District. 1 he candidates defeated last S*t i unlay may congratulate themselves that they will not be compelled to go through a hard fought campaign i and spend much time and money and then be defeated by liepubli I cans. Water Works all Right. 1 he Aiivasck claims that hv its persistent agitation of the matter teredo people were induced toes-' lablish a system of water works I he tire at the home of Mrs Napier last Wednesday n;ght proves be yond the shadow of a doubt that this paper was right in advocating tire protection. Some i>eople argu- j ed that the town could not afford to i pay *1000 a year for this protec lion. Hut they should reniemht r that by reason of the water-works tire insurance rates have been re duced >o per cent, and property at ibis one tire, probably to tbe amount of $10,000, was savid by) reason of tbe protection It would have been impossible to have saved Mrs. Napier's dwelling or any one | of the three frame residences ad- ! joining, on the south. In all pro- ' liability the dames would not have slopped at these buildings, besides 1 the brick wall of the bank building would have been badly damaged. ’1'is ^ true that the money required to pay for this protection and for street lights will take about all the money | t lir> tnu’n non raiun u • »n • _ I ! levy (37 cents on the $100 valua tion^, but, the money is well ex pended and the council, even if it so desired, cannot enact laws pro hibiting this expenditure. These w ater and light claims must be met. even should they take every cent of the taxes collected—ami they cer tainly will take about all that can law fully be raised this year—unless the people vote for an additional levy This additional levy should by all means be favorably acted up on, as it is absolutely necessary to put in a new sewer to carry off the water that passes down the “l' Street Canal.” If the council should order a special election (as the law requires) no voter should hesitate a minute in casting his bal lot in favor of say 20 cents addi tional. This added to the*37 cents would make 57, three cents less than the levy has been for several years. This morning between Tf.O and 8 o’clock a heartrending accident happened in North t'atletishurg. (’. < >. passenger tradi No. 5, west bound, struck the 14 months old baby or Mr. and Mrs. ('has. Thomas, not killing it instantly, but inflict ing such serious injunes that'it can not possibly live. Mrs. Thomas haif gone to Kenova to visit, and left the baby in the care of a neigh bor. The little one strayed out of the yard where it. had been playing, and got onto the railroad track. When the train came rushing along, the bal>e was unable to gain a place of safety and was s ruck, its skull being crushed and the scalp torn from the head The physicians called, pronounced it a very serious case.—(’atlettsburg cor.
