WATTS, Main Street, CEKEIM), W. VA. Hon. John 8. Durst, whoso can didacy for State Auditor has been announced and is making most gratifying headway, has all his life been an ardent and enthusi astic party worker. He has es pecially st^od for the interests of the people at largo, and no man in the state has worked harder or more effectively for the present policy of the party in this stute than hus Mr. Darst. In the state legislature he at once took a commanding position. He went thero with convictions and he exerted every effort at hiB com mand to embody them into laws. The first measure that engaged his attention was to do away with the fee system in the offices of the Secretary of State and of the Auditor, placing them on a fixed salary and thus saving to the state thousands of dollars each year. This law was enacted largely by his own efforts. It was Senator Darst who fathered the bill abolishing the public execution of criminals in West Virginia. Also the law requiring fire insurance companies doing business in the state to pay the full amount stated in the policy in ca*e of total loss by fire. Mr. Darst cau with justioe be clas-ed with the original tax re formers. From his earliest ex periences he has advocated th9 main features of the law as it now stcpids on the statute books. In 1904 he was a candidate for Auditor of the Htate, and when Mr. Scherr was the choice of the convention he at once took off his coat and worked for the ticket. He stumped the state trom the Pennyslvania to the Kentucky lines. In the campaign of 1900 he was asked to work iu the Second congressional district, where he did earnest and effect ive work. Now, he appeals to the party to gratify a lifelong ambition. This he and his friends con sidor his time, and if he fails now he will probably never be able to reach his goal. He haa made good at whatever be haa under* j taken so far in life. His friends feel that he will mako good as Auditor if elected and that a pro motion is due him. — Wheeling In telligencer. Strictly speaking, it is none of the business of a Democratic newspaper whom the Republicans nominate for office, but wo want to rise to say that we know whereof we speak when we assert that there is no better Republican in the state than Hon. John Sher man Darst, candidate for Auditor Mr. Darst is strictly honest and a people’s man iu the broadest sense of the word. He is the real author of the tax reform move ment in this state. The editor of the News served two sessions of the legislature with Mr. Dar-it, and had the vory best opportunity to judge tho man.—W. Lf Mans field, in Wayne News, May, 1904. Ah a result of the primary held in Monongalia county on Satur day, John 8. Darst, candidate for Auditor, carried the county over hia opponent, James K. Hall, by almost three votes to one. Mr. Darst is making considerable headway in his fight for Auditor. In fact it looks like he is the choice of the people. John 8. Darst is peculiarly a man of the people. In every single county where Mr. Darst and his opponent have been before the people, Darst has carried off the honors. He beat Hall in Tuoksr county, Wetz6l county, Summers oouuty and Monongalia county. It looks like Darst already has the nomi» nation. With Monongalia’s twen ty-one, he has about one hundred instructed delegates. This lead over his opponent will be hard to overcome.—Charleston Mail, May 4, 1908. For Over Hixty Team. MRB.
