Volcano Lubricator, j j TUESDAY SEPT. 2, -873 GEORGE P. SARGENT, MjBLISPER & PROPRIETOR, Volcano West Va 1^1-1 -? ?' -? ' The Oil Production of July. From the Pennsylvania Petroleum Reporter, compiled by S. II. Stowell, Esq., we <;!can the following facts with regard to the production 01" oil in Pennsylvania for the month of July* ii?73, which may be accounted, coming Ironi the source thev do, as reliable: Number of barrels of oil on hand at the clo<e of the month, -'00.76^; num ber of barrels of oil produceu in the month, reckoned upon the basis ot 31 davs to the month, 27.893; number of wells producing, 4.420; number of wells driiling<340; number of barrels of oil in iron tanks and pipe lines, 1,09s, 671; number of barrels he'd by re finers, 134. iSa; total number of bar rels of bit held in trie divisions and ttistnets, 1,433,6:0. Upon c-j:upa-ing the production of July, we find the production lor June, 793.4S2 bar; els, against a production for Jul v of 864,696 barrels, showing an increase in the production of the lat ter month of 71,214 barrels, or an av erage daily increase of 1.444 barrels per dav. toinparing the same months we find a dccrc.ise for May of stock of 19.654 barrels, which, though small. i> still encouraging, but to offset this, however, there is an increase of stock in iron tanks and refineries of 128,781 barrels over that of June. In Tune there were .1.400 producing wells as against 4,420 in July, .shewing an increase cf twenty producing wells for the latter named month. What seems a little singular is the fact, upon comparing t'ie daily production of these 2 montHs, that these 20 additional wells only show a production of 72 4-20 barrels per day, while they are report ed in the newspapers of that date, as yielding all the way from one hundred and fiftv to five hundred barrels per dav. Our West Virginia territory, on Elliot's Run. will discount the above showing. Of wells in process of drill ing, there is an increase of forty-five; there oeing 345 wells fob July against 295 loi* June. To give our readers a better idea of the vast trade in petroleum, we pub tish the production ar.d shipments for thirteen mouths, from June. 1872, to June, 1S73, inclusive, as reported by the Producers' Association and Coun cil for the first nine months, and by the Pennsylvania Petroleum Reporter for the past four months. It must be remembered that this does hot include the production or shipments of West Virginia or Her Majesty's possessions, the Canadas: REPORTED PRODUCT. 1572, June, ... 500,063 1 " July. - - - 53-.175 " August, - - - 549-935 " September, - - 500,454 " October, - - - 132,375 " November, - 638,6:1 December, - ? 645.579 1573, January, 7, - - 632,629 " February, - - 608.305 " March, ... 665,308 I' April, ... 641,526 " May, - - - 77^364 " June, - - - 7934S2 Total product reported, - 7,6i6,Si6 Shipments over reported pro duct, - 125,129] Stocks reported June 3?, lS73. * I'3-4'493 Stocks reported June 1, 1S72, - - 978,026 Increase in stocks, 346,467 Total product by shipments and increase in stocks, S, 088,412 REPORTED SHIPMENTS. 1872, Tune, ? - - 529,228 " Jul?, - - - 59*'234 1 " August, - - - 621,957 " Se >t<;mber; - - 541,608 " (^ctober, - - 607,458 " November, - - 477.945 " December, - - 430.786 1S73, January, 7, - - 573-,;:4 " February, - - 527:440 " March, ... 668.374 " April, - - - 70b. -91 " 3tay, - - - 76S.176 " Jdnc, - - - 696,414 Total shipments' - - 7.74T.945 Daily average shipments, - 19,600 Daity average product report ed, - 19.282 Daily shipments over report ed product, ... 31S [ Average daily product, - 20,477 Oil Items. The Elliott Run Oil Company com menced a well on 'i htirsday last, which they propose to hurry on to comple tion. This is the tract in which J. M. Stockdale is interested, having pur chased the interest of T. L. Ford in a tract of thirty acres. Messrs. Roland, Boyles & Co. are nearly down with their well on Elliott Run. a-'' -rhich gives every promise of being a spouter. Thev have several leases in this neighborhood. The Twin Lick Oil Company are making iVadv to rut do" ri n well on | . " ??? . Elliott Run, and hope to commence i operations soon. The Hillsdale CompSny arc in active , ?preparation tor a new well on a new J tract of land king on what is know t> ; as the Volcanic Ridge. C. W. Metier is the able and successful superinten dent of this company. The production last week 011 the Volcanic Oil rind Coal Land Compa ny's tract, reached thirty-two hundred brtrrt'ls. The iron tank belonging to W. C. Stiles, jr., with a capacity of six thou sand barrels, has been completed and we learn it is to be filled with oil and held for better prices. The Modoc Oil Company with A. C. Gatton, Esq., as superintendent; have thirty acres of most desirable ter ritory on Elliott Run, with a rig up and everything in readiness to com mence drilling, which they will do this week. The Elliott Run territory seems to be the favored spot at pres ent for about all tne new developments that are going forward. Pe troleum vs. Coal as a Fuel. We take from '.he Philadelphia Press, of a recent date, an interesting account of an experiment recently made at Lnmokin, where the machine shops of the Baltimore and Central Railroad Company's works are located. The results of the experiments &i-e most decidedly ericotiraging. as ihdicatmg future uses for oils, which, at no dis tant day will olfer an cfutlet for all the I crude material that rrtfy he produced, at prices which shall justify the risk taken in its production. Read the article carefully, which we hear append: ? Petroleum has for seme time past engaged the attention of some of the most scieintfic and skilful inventors of the age, in the developing and applica tion of its known qualities fbi* hfcat. Many mechanical devices for tile pur pose have been constructed, .vhich possessed more of less merit when worked in a small way, but signally failed to accomplish the desired end when practically tested On a large scale. In response to an invitation from I. Hendricks, Esq., of Philadel phia, the inventor of a new and im proved device for biirning petroleum and !ts prbdticts, wc visited the ma chine shops of the Philadelphia and Baltimore Central Railway Company, at Lamokin, and witnessed its opera tion. We found the apparatus placed in fhe fire-box^of the stationary engine used to drive the works cf the shop in question (being a forty-horse power) in full operation. No special change or alteration in the furnitce was made, further than the removal of the grate bars, and substituting in their place the oil vaporizer and burner. THeap paraius is very simple in cuusirucuun, and easily applied to heating purpose;, at a little tost. The prineiple of the device consist^ in the decomposition of water into its component elements, oxygen and hvdrbgen, and uniting the same under intense heat with the hy dro-carbon vapors of petroleum, thus furnishing from water the equivalent of hydrogen; (naturally deficient in oil.) necessity to perfect combustion. For this purpose two walled iron cyl inders are mdde use of, with 'he burner placed immediately underneath, of which novel arrangement the flame from the burner is made to superheat the steam tn one and decompose both steam and oil In the dther, and from hehce passes to the place where the heat is required; ohe and the same flame doing the entire work desired, no other fuel being made use of. The trial in its practical workings proved eminently successful in every respect. Every appliance was brought to bear upon it to break down its force that the shops could command, but a head of steam was kept up without any deviation. In every respect it was fully demonstrated to the entire satis faction of a number of practical gen tlemen present, that its adaptability for generating steam for motive power and manufacturing purposes generally, was beyond question, and that too, at about one-thiid less cost than coal. The advantages claimed by the use of pfctroleum over coal as a fuel, are less cost and labor in handling; the oil once turned on burns until turned steam ofT; no cutting out ol clinkers; no stoking required ? no ashes, no cinders, no sparks, no smoke ? less time required in getting up heat. It can be started in a few minutes, and extinguished instantly, with no danger whatever, as the tank holuing the oil may be located fifty or a hundred yards away from the building. It is perfect Iv under control. Its freedom from sulphur produces a very superior quali ty of i;on, when applied to puddling furnaces. These are a few of the ad vantages that experiments have de monstrated can be accomplished. It is also claimed tHat a superior article of gas can be made by this process at less than one-half the present cost, and as well as for heating houses, and for all purpose for which light and heat are required. If one-hull* can he accomplished that seems to have been demonstrated in the present trial, it will create a great revolution in the use of fuel, and will j prove ot incalculable value to the pub lic generally.
