John Shat'er, the bilker, is laying in a choice lot of Christman candy. We have a crazy preacher here who lectures every afternoon. We recom mend him to try the village ol" Petro leura. The subject announced for a text at the M. E. Church, on Sunday morn insr next, is '? Baptism." Mr. C. W. Metier and family leave herefor Hillsdale. Michigan. on Thurs day next. The good wishes of a host ?of friends go with them. We again acknowledge ourselves in ?debted to J. W". Horner, Serjeant-at Arms of the House of Delegates, for favors in the shape of valuable Pub. Doc. The Baptist Sunday School \\ ill I eelebrate Christmas bv erecting tree J in their church, tilled with presents tor their children. The celebration i will take placc on the evening before ?Christmas, at 6 o'clock. | On Wednesday next, the parents i and friends of the free schools are re- 1 ?quested tomeet in room No. t, prompt- ; Ijr at 2 o'clock. Interesting exercises , will take place, and the schools then , }je closed for holidays. The Sunday School connected with i the M. E. CI t'.rch propose to cele- 1 hrr.tc Christmas by a supper in the j 4ecture room, at 5:30 p. m., for the j children, and a grand sociable for the older persons. All friends of the church are invited to be present. We understand our friend Mr. j Fletcher, the tailor, is about to build a ( shop on Raymond street, below Sam'! ; Thompson &Ja:kson, where he can, carry on his business. Meantime, if) you want anything done in his line, ' call on him at the office of J. S. Mc (Juire. j The editors and proprietors of the I Parke-sburg Examiner seem deter- | mined to provoke a quarrel with us; i for what reason we do not know, neith- j er do we care. Kor the past three j weeks that paper has been full of low | Rings and scurilous inuendoes in re- J yard to lis, prompted by a different ! spirit from what we had good reason j to expect from that quarter. All of these locals (?) must be interesting reading matter for their ico.ooo sub scribers, and if we can be the means j of furnishing them copy we have no ! objection. The last number of the | Examiner had no less than three a!- J lusions to us in no very complimentary ? manner, and we only hope it pleased j them, for we know ft did not hurt us. j We do iict propose to reply to their j articles in the same spirit in which they indited them; we write this arti- 1 .cle only to say that of our past life we | liave no Tears in comparing it to theirs, but whatever we mav have done, we j .are satisfied that it was only following an old example sctbv them. We con fess we were not apt scholars. We J never did get down qui'e as low; we j .never did break any of the laws of the land. No! j:o! Messrs. Hv!itor?. we never claimed to set you anv example, or to lead you. We were content to ! follow you at a disi/ince, and trv in some manner to imita'e you, to our shame be it said. RELIGIOUS ITJ3M3. The Emmanuel Church of this place A'tU hold religious services on Christ mas morning, commencing at eleven o'clock. And on the evening of that day, at 6 o'clock, a Christmas tree wilt L?c e reeled in the chinch, containing the presents for the Sunday School children and others. Ail arc invited to attend. The Baptists of this place arc steadi ly increasing in numbers. On Sunday last, we were present and witnessed the immersion of sixteen new converts. ? This solemn sacrament was conducted by the Rev. T. J. Knapp, in the pres ence of about 300 persons. The best ! ot order prevailed, and nothing occur red to mar the harmony and solemnity of the occasion. The M. E. Church of this place are still continuing their revival. On Sat urday night, ami Sunday morning and night, the Presiding Elder of this Dis trict held Quarterly Meeting, and the services were well attented. On Sun day morning tbe Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was administered to one hundred and nine communicants. Let the good work go cn. The United Brethren are holding j meetings at the school house on Oil Spring run. Services next Sunday at all the churches. Don't fail to attend. The Mite Society connected with the Emmanuel Church will meet at the res- , idenceof Mrs. D. Mudge, on Wednes day evening next. HOLIDAYS. Where arc you going to buy your presents? K.J. A. Boreman has got a fine lot of articles suitable for that purpose. W. 11. Warne & Co. have removed to their new store, erected on the site where their old store was burned, and you can visit them and be sure to find something that will suit your friends for presents. McConahv, the crack jeweler of Parkersburg, lias enlarged and replen ished his stock. Go there and fir.d anything you want in that line. It pays to buy jewelry from McConahy; you get just what you call for. Dan. Shafer can a'.so fit you out with anything yoti want in his line, a; his ware-rooms on Ann street. Friends of the Volcano Lvdrica tor, if you want to buy holiday pres ents for your friends, and examine the stock o!" goods of the gentlemen named in this article, for they keep your home paper going. To he sure there arc some that are a little better than others, but the worst ones have come to the conclusion that they would do better, so ve will not dis tinguish them at present; but if they do not reform, we will he compelled to do so. We will say that we have! no reason to complain of the respect shown us by the pupils or parents of J Volcano. And we are glad to see that there is so much interest shown; but we think there i> room for im provement on the part of all of us. ? The mar ket here is very weak this afternoon and producers are becoming poorer every day. No new wells arc being started from the top of the ground, but nobody can see the end of the fourth, sand devclopement. Sheriff's sales arc constantly going on all over this section, and there are very few houses in Modoc City without one of their notices. Two of our best hotels I were sold under the hammer to-day, and tin? proprietors, who consider j themselves the victims of misplaced j confidence, are about to try their luck : in some place where the population is more stable, and money is more plen- ' lv . The whole business of the lower country looks darker, financially, and j more hopeless to-day than it has ever i done before. J.'' During the Tichborne trial, Dr. Kcnealy told the following story to il lustrate the dangerous ingenuity of Mr. Hawkins, the leading counsel for the Crown, in the art of cross-exam ination. He said: "Indeed, my learn ed friend can sometimes make witness es say what he pleases. You perhaps may remember the great but; case, in which my friend shone with such lus tre. It was an action brought by a London householder to recover rent, which the defendant refused to pay because the house was so overrun with bugs that lie could not live in it. My learned friend examined and cross examined and re-examined the wit nesses till the whole court seemed filled with an atmosphere of bugs. ? My friend at last asked a witness, 'Were not the bugs in such strong num bers and so well organized that when you we to catch them they turned around a.ul barked at you?' The poor witness was so overcome by my friend's skill and audacity that he answered, 'I bc!ic\e they did.'" SI* EC I A i j NOTICES, A Great j'cdvciio/t in 1'riccs for Cash!
