M. LOCAL ITEMS. A MERRY CHRISTMAS. We wish to each and even one of| our subscribers and readers a merry Christmas. Go to R. J. A. Boreman's for Holi day presents. Times here are still very dull. No local news of any importance. Go try Magill's fine Christmas can dies. Preaching next Sunday at all the churches. The Episcopal evening ser vice commences at 4 o'clock. Read R. J. A. Boreman's advertise ment, in this issue. Oil is looking up a little. Thirty days more and our oil men will have bridged the crisis. Next week we shall something a bout the new block on Market street, in Parkersburg. W. H. Warne & Co. have got a fine lot of new goods suitaole for Holiday presents. Read their advertisement. On Christmas morning divine ser vices will be held at the Emmanuel Church, commencing at 11 o'clock. ? All are invited. Ws toe that notwithstanding the hard times, our citizens are making ar rangements for the proper observance of Christmas. Martin Sc Gilbert keep a choice lot oi groceries at their olu stand, next door to tbe Adam's Express ofltce. ? Give them a call. We learn that the O'Brien Bros, have started up their new machine works at Parkersburg. We shall visit them before our next issue. John Hannan has enlarged his boil er works at Parkersburg, and has pur chased of Mr. Charles Despard the boiler machinery belonging to that gentleman. Success John. W. H. Warne & Co. have ore of the finest furniture ware rooms in the State. Go there and examine their 6tock of holiday goods. Remember the stand, on Market stFeet, below Market house. Christmas will be celebrated at all the churches here. The Baptists haye their celebration cn to-morrow eve ning, and th? Methodists and Episco palians on Christmas night. All the friends of the churches are invited to be present. We learn that there is a family here who are actually suffering for the necessaries of life. This has no need to be. Let any one that is posted in form our efficient overseer of the poor, Mr. Staples, and lie will promptly at tend to the matter. We can pity some of our exchanges who complain of the pancity of local news. Nearly three months now since there has been a light on our streets; no mad dogs, no drunkenness, nobody getting hurt, no new wells going down, no new strikes, and, of course, no one getting married. Our enterprising fellow-citizens of Twin Lick have made a fine walk from the M. E. Church to Col. Vir.al's re.-> idence. They have covered it with cinders and made a first-class walk of it. We have heard, however, that some "country Jake" deliberately walked l?i? ho-s.' from one end of it to the other, and broko down several of ?he drains constructed aeross the walk at various places. If our friends up there would apply a No. 9 cowhide boot to such a numbskull, it would breed a rcioiui. Average daily product of the Penn sylvania oil regions from the discov ery of petroleum to October ist, 1S73, 10,715 bbls. Total production for the same time 52,443,096 bbls. There is more oil here now held for the market to raise, than ever before. We know parties who have 2,000 bar rels of oil now tanked, that never had over 400 barrels before. Rev. T. J. Knapp has been regular ly called to fill the Pastoral of the Volcano Baptist Church. Bro. Knapp is a live man. a good christian and an excellent preacher. He preached his first sermon on Sunday last. We have just received a copv of Col. Henry's book, entitled "Parly and Later History of Petroleum." ? We have had no time to peruse the work, and o( course cannot pass an opinion upon its merits. McConahy still keeps up his repu tation for selling goods cheap. If any of our friends wish to make us a pres ent, Mc has fine watches and jewelry. Call on him when you go to Parkers burg, and examine his stock. We have a lady out here who is on war-path because she has discovered a piece of Ostrich plume in her hus band's beard, and she was not the pos sessor of such a bit of adornment. ? No cause for disturbance ? it probably grew there. John P. Wait has on hand for sale at ?ow prices, three stationary boilers; dimensions as follows: Two 20 feet long, 40 inches in diameter. One 22 feet long. 30 inches in diameter. Call at his new store on Market street, and you can find out the price. The boil ers are in first-class order. Z. T. Devore has just received a choice lot of tine smoking tobacco of the following named brands; Pioneer, Lone Jack, Durham, and Essence of Old Virginia He also has for sale fine plug chewing tobacco, and cigars. All articles in this line that Mr. De vore offers for sale are A No. 1. C ;?.!! and try a bag of the "Lone Jack." We have received the information that the Legislature of this State broke up in a drunken row without passing the Appropriation Bill. We are not surprised that they broke up in a drunken row, fur that is consistent with their whole course, but we are a iittie surprised that the failed to p.tss the Appropriation Bill, as they have not failed to pass any bill that came before them where there was any mon ey in it for themselves. What an en couragement for capitalists to come in to our Sta'e. We point with pride (?) to our Legislature. Wc see that the merchants in the Pen isylv.mia oil regions have adopt ed the cash system, and marked down their goods in proportion. Refined oil is quoted at cents fcr g?dh? Cut loaf sugar, 12 ets. per lb.; Ji nest young hyson tea, $1,25 per lb.; St. Louis hams, it cts. per lb.; and other things in proportion. We reproduce an article in this is sue cut from the Parkersburg Daily Times, and credited to the Ritchie Ga zette. For an article containing so few words, we never saw one contain ing so many infamous falsehoods. ? We propose to reply to part of the germ of that fabrication, and to tell a plain, unvarnished tale, and tell it in such a manner that hereafter the Ga j zettc will not be willing to make edi torials of any information that may come to them from their re-//V-ab!e Parkersburg correspondent. We never could conceive why a person should take pleasure in expos ing other people's faults, when it would not benefit the one who expos es, and that too, when the pe;son ex posed never harmed hiin. Such things are never done except by the most de praved. We propose, with this much by way of beginning, to strip the a bovc-mentioned article of all its ver biage, and come to the subject matter at once: About the middle of November, the Rev. L. F. llorton, of New Orleans, La., came to Volcano, havmg regular credentials as an Elder in the Me.ho dist church south. Rev. E. C. Way man, pastor of the M. E. church north , of this place, had been holding protracted services then nearly seven weeks, and needing some one to assist him in preaching, and the Rev. llor , ton beinj; regularly recoinmonded by I iiishop Kavanaugh, of the M. E. j church south, and offering his services j to Mr. Waym.'n t! ?;v were gladly ac jcepted. At no time in t!>< course ot j the t?Mi d r. < < : u>s;U?J Rev*. Way- j jrr.an, did Mr. Hoi :o.i UuU the work 1 that w.tj theii going o:., a.u at iu time did he, by deed or word, do any thing unbecoming a christian gentle man. The statement in the Gaxettc thai "he asked the hand of one of the sisters" is a base lie, and worthy of its origin. So much for his Volcano ca reer. We dot intend in this article to stand as champion for Mr. Ilorton. ? That he has erred palpable, but that he has run the whole gauntlet of the rccord book of crime, no one but the Gazette. would be reckless enough to charge. The Rev. Ilorton wore no "cluster of diamonds," a modest liltle diamond stud adorned his shirt front. He was no "gay deceiver," no gam bier, no black-!eg of the first water, nor had he been traveling over the country quite extensively in the role of a minister; neither did the Rev. Wavman get a letter from a leading minister of Xew Orleans charging him with it. Bro. Wavman did re ceive a letter from Rev. W. V. Tudor of that place, stating that the Rev. L. F. Ilorton had credentials signed by Bishop Kavanaugh. lie never had a diamond pin. consequently he could not have stolen one. Now for the facts in the case as we know them, and then we hope that .til who read this article will "cast the broad mantle of charity" over the faults of the Reverend gentleman: Some time in 1S71, at Wilmington, N. C., Charles W. Warren was a reg ularly credited minister in the M. E. church, and like most young men who are just starting life, he relied too much on his own strength, and like most young men who do this failed. ? His crime was, that he intercepted a letter directed to one of his people, obtaining a draft or check, (its con tents) and presented it to the bank for payment. The bank officers, suspect ing that somctning was wrong, refused to pay the money on the paper, r.nd Mr. Warren left the city that after noon. It is supposed that C. W. War ren and L. F. I lorton are one and the same person. It is easy to trarc the career of crime of this gentleman from the time lie reached New Orleans to the pres ent time. He was admitted to the deacon's order, ordained an elder in Louisiana Conference under the name cf L. F. ilorton. and faithfully work ed in his Master's vineyard until re cently. Being smart, active, intelli gent and eloquent, he was dangerous to some one of the old members of that Conference; the sleuth-hounds wete put upon his track, the old, old crime was tracked tip against he, but ho obtaii.cd his credentials and left be fore the hounds overtook him. "Alas l".>r the rarity Of Christian charity." Living the life of deception that he did, when questioned about his past life he was too honest; lie had 110 ready tale coined, he prevaricated, he was lost. Oh! how hard he plead that some of his friends in Volcano would not juiigc him harshly, but wait a time until he could satisfactorily explain himself. Thank God, some of them arc doing this. We blame Mr. Ilor ton that when he was questioned he did not tell the whole truth to the Pre siding Elder Ison, and then 30 ahead with a clear conscience and try and outlive what we fear has been to him "a mistake of a lifetime." One thing more, we have heard every crime that could be named im puted to this man, but in this town, we arc glad to know, they are not believ ed. The many good things- that he said here will be long remembered, and we are also pleased to know that out here, in this town 011 the hills, '"the good effect will not be spoiled by a bad story." We commend the quo tation below to the Gazette: "Then gently scan your brother-man, Still gentler sister woman; Though both may gang a kenniu wranjj, To slej> aside is human." Holiday Gifts. We know of nothing that would please a friend more than to present them with a good American Watch. Too expensive you say ? No, Devore has marked the price down to suit hard times Go to Devore's and ex amine his extensive stock of Jewelry, consisting of ladies sets, gold rings, studs, sleeve buttons, bracelet- , etc. Examine his stock of notions, buy a good gold pen; in fact, go to Devore's, on Raymond Street, and you will find iomethiuji that will he both useful and | ornamental. Call on Devore for good I tobacco and cigars. ?^E0.
