Tompkins will deliver an address on temperance, at the Em man uel Chvrch. on Sunday evening next at 6:30 o'clock. All arc invited to attend, and we hope that there will be a large turn out. Services next Sunday at all the churches. Read Z. T. Devore's local notice, to those that are indebted to him. All of our grocery stores are now selling goods cheap for ca<h. And cur friend Dye and his wife have our congratulations. "It is a girl." Vv> give our readers in another col umn. the wind-tip of the "Avon Mys tery,** which we published last week. Any of our friends can obtain the latest authentic information in regard to the quotations of oil, by calling at our office. Hon. Caleb Cushing has'been nom inated for the office of Chief Justice by the President. A good selection, and we hope the Senate will confirm the nomination. Wc were a little amv.sed the other d iv. to see a man going home with a pound of beans and a rasher of side meat, muttering to himself. '"God bless the rich, the poor can bo^.'' The majority of the Congressional Committee on election?, have reported in favor of rending back the Congres sional aspirants of West Va. to the people to !><* reindorsed. The Mite Society connected with the Emmamtal Church, meets r.t the residence of Mrs. G. P. Sa?r?r.t. on Wednesday night next. All ar? in \ ited to attend. Don't chew tobacco in church. You w ould hardly think of chewing tobacco and spitting on tiie floor in a parlor, why then go to the house of God and profane it thus? No true gentleman would do it. Jas. F. Partridge, Esq., has been ap pointed Post Master at Laurel Junc tion. An excellent appointment, and one that will suit the people who have business with that office. Accept our congratulations, friend Jame?. "Bears, ?' how do you like the figures? Amount of oi! demanded by the refi ners per day, .;c,coo Amount of oil produced per <KV 33045 Demand over production, 6,955 The oil market is improving. Now look out for "bears." Our oil region exchanges are all of the opinion that oil will iK?w mike a steady advance. All our oil men who c;::i hold their oil had better do so; we believe it will be for their advantage. I\. L, Conger and Thomas IVg g. have purchased of W. A. MeCosh, Esq., all his right, title ai:d interest in the Ritchie Coal Bank. The now linn now consists of IJ. L. Conger, Thom as Pegg and L. ?>. Delliker. T!:c fir:n name will be E. I.. Congtv & Co. Mav succcss attend them is our sin cere wish. A Mr, Robinscn of Sand J till, cut his foot badly on Wednesday last, and will be laid up lor live or six weeks. We understand that he Is in destitute ci? cumstances, and we hope that our people will keep their eves open and see that he or iiis f;iinilv do not suffer. Our colored follow citizen, Mr. Jas. Williams, Volcano's oni.v barber, li?s 'eft our Burg, and wc lia\e 110 011c to take his place. A first class barber i> our friend James, and we shall miss him much. A good barber c.m now tind a first rate opening here. We congralnlate our voting friend W. X. Chancellor. Esq., (>n It is elec tion to the honorable position of May or of Parkersburg. We know lie will make a good Mayor; we know lie is the very man for the position. I lis j every interest i? identified with that city, and as he has always been an ac | tivc, wide-awake business man, he wil! bring all these much needed qualifica tion* to the position. The city of Parkersburg may well be proud of her choice. The democrats made a clean sweep in Parkersburg, on Saturday last, elect ing their entire city ticket by large j majorites. We hope that if the coun cil just elected remove our old friend ColTinan from his position (which they should not do) as city Sergeant; that they will confer that honor on Mr Thomas Hughes, who, in our opinion is the very man for the place. One of the weakly papers published in Parkersburg, stated that a demo cratic office holder from Volcano, went round with a large wad of mon ey, offering to bet that the first Nation al Bank could not run t he city elec tion. As no democratic office holder from Volcano was in Parkersburg on Wednesday last, and if they had been they had no wad of money, this must j be another "anaconda story." The 'Titusvillc Courier' has changed hail (is. M. X. Allen is now editor, publisher and proprietor. We consider it tiie best oil paper published. Mr. Allen publishes his paper to suit him self, and that is the only way to make any paper a success. Any one want ing a Pennsylvania oil paper contain ing all the news, should subscribe for the Courier. Now that the fourth sand shows ev ery indication of becoming rapidly ex hausted. it is generally conceeded that no new development from the surface of the ground will be risked until the petroleum markets permanently react to about $4.00 per barrel. Capitalists prefer to put their money in oil above ground and hold for a rise. ? Herald. Millions of dollars were lost in the great Butler county petroleum basin of 1S7*. The larger the strikes and the rncro proliiic the territory, the more capital wa? hopelessly sunk. ?Herald. 1 i;rcc full editions of the Bun piled up just as the papers leave the press will make a monument as high as Trinity Church steeple. It takes 125 ! thicknesses of the Bun paper to make ' an inch. Taking the height of Trinity 1 Church <pire at 250 feet, or j.ocoinch ! l . and the average daily circulation ol* the Sun at 125,000 copics, we find that it will require just 375,000 thick nesses of the paper, or three days' is sue, to reach from the level of Broad - i way to the highest point of the tallest vpirc in New York. But if the paper is folded for mailing, one days' issue piled up as before, will make a monu ment ten times as high as Trinity, with paper enough left over to reach forty feet above the top of the Little Church around the corner. The editor of the Hocking (Ohio) %ntincl says he has been invited to purchase a three dollar ticket for the Inauguration Ball, and he says: "If possums and hickory nuts come in pretty lively on subscription, and we can dispose of our traps for cash with out too much sacrifice, we shall buy a ticket, and go. In times past, even as modern as since Jackson, we recollect hoeing it down in our cow-hide shoes, all night on the festive kitchen floors ! of the Rush Creek Valley, for the sum : of ten ccnts, and if the Inauguration is to be a revival of the good old times, , the ancient guard, and all dancing is 1 furnished at the old rates, it strikes us j that in getting three dollars' worth we I can do a powerful sigl t of heavy work j and so distinguish ourself among the j chivalry as to add another of fame to i the noted town we may represent." Gone out Forever. i Luc dropping, ih ing stars, our I dearly loved ones go away from our I sight ? the stars of our hopes, our am I bitions, our prayers, whose light ever ! shines before us, their place is left ' empti , cold and dark. The SulcIifT gun, cast recently at the West Point foundry, weighed in the rough stntc^ 72,000 pounds, and is the largest gun ever made. The gun is made of iron standing a pull of 30, 000 pounds, and is now nineteen feet long, but when finished will be only fifteen feet in length. It is to have a steel barrel four inches thick at the breech and three at the muzzle, with rifle bore and weighing 44,000 pounds. The shot will be nine inches in diame ter and will weigh about 250 pounds. It will require eight days to cool the monster by the Rodman process ? wa ter being run through the bore during all that time. . The gun is being made J for government experiments. Sl'ECIA I NOTICES.
