M oscoa Con s ling has again returned t> • ew York and comes just in time to take pP*r; in the political campaign that is about ' to be inaugurated. The Republicans have keen trying to cipher out a slate, a pUtform and a campaign to suit themselves while Saara* has been away, and it will be inter j esting to see what effect his arrival will pro ! dace upon political affairs. Roaros has his own peculiar ideas about things, and he I likes to see them carried into effect. Some of the Virginia Justices of the Peace have original ideas about conducting their businees. A justice in one of the border coun'iea has struck the happy thought of depending upon Patent Ottice reports tor law and for legal forms. This Justice is a Terr good man to have around, but adjoiaing counties and Sûtes are rather at a disadvantage. He always takes his <owa time to cipher out and write a warrant iora man s arrest, and several days before the warrant is ready tor use the criminal has slipped across the line into West Vir ginia and the people oi his own community are no more disturbed by him. I Ma. Robert Garrett has returned from kit European tour and finds some very im portant questions concerning his railroad and telegraphic interests confronting him. The Western Union Telegraph Company hare, ever since his absence, been casting longing eyes upon the R A 0. telegraph Ine, and th»ir hngiog has no1 c?as?d at his return. The late railroad negotiations that have been going on in Pennsylvania and New York makes it seem very probable that a vigorous movement is on foot to keep the R A 0. railroad out of New York City. Mr. Garrett can interest himself tor some time in looking after these matters. What efforts be will make in regard to them will be very interesting. The revolt in Roumelia has been as •peaceable and quiet as anyone could wish. It is not often that the government of an entire province chan.ee hand- without bloodshed Rut the affair may in the end prove quite serioaa. The Sultan is not go _ in«, to let of best provinces pass out oniisiiands without raising some objections He is amassing an army tor some purpose, and H is likely to be used to quell this re volt The revolt is said to have been 5 urged on by Austria and Russia, and to see the Saltan interfere with an army is just what these two nations wish. They would have a regular picnic in dividing the spoils. Austria would scoop in Bosnia and Herze govina, and Russia would be free to control Bulgaria and Ronmelia and as much other territory as she should wish. Ir the Chief of Police will do his own in vestigating thoroughly and promptly and act with corresponding energy and deci sion, this community will stand by him. Otherwise it will not. Neither the Mayor nor Council has anything to do with Officer Brass'case, unless the Chief neglects , to pay attention to it, and we believe this is not the Chiefs intention. If Officer Rcrss is maligned keep him on the force. If not, not. The Chief knows his duty, and kr ow ing it we trust he has the courage to exe cute it. It the deputies are worthy men stand by them, and against all spite work and malice. Rut if they are gnilty of improper conduct as officers they oagbt to be bounced and the order of their going ought not to be considered eith As the Chief, to the subordinate. II the head lack firmness and vigilance the rank and file will take quick advantage. The Chief will be held responsible for every act of his force. If they be good and faith tul officers, he will receive the praise. We are glad to Me the World baa aome Haut Each «uccecding Sunday has aroused oar most aerioas apprehension for fear this mammoth concern would jet add eight more pagee and then we woold have had to hire four more handa to read all the other bulging exchangee that would have thought it their duty to follow auit. To the provin cial newspaper man who thinks he must read all the newa or elae go behind hia fel lows, these acre and a half newspapers are not only breaking him down for want of rest, bat are breaking his peace of mind as well becaose of his otter inability to emu lat * th »m. B it seru osly speaking, is it not a ques tion whether thtae large sized Sunday taoers have much monej in them to their publisher«? The expenditure of extra sub stance on a great big paper with as many «quare inches cf surface as the main sail of the jacht Puritan nearly, is more an enterprise for réputation and noise than for real business profit. For several Sundays the World bas been publishing a paper, which contains twenty four pages of matter. It« very size overwhelms the par chaser, and before he is aware of it his limited time to ptruse the news has all been absorbed in a cur or j glance at the mis cellaneous melange on its many pagea In fact he is so bewildered over the magnitude of his paper that he has barely begun before he throws it down in despa:r, to pick np something smaller and : n<arer bis comprehension. The publica I tion of these vast sheets must be a great strain on the daily working force of a paper. ! to say nothing of their expensiveness. A twenty four page paper like the World of last Sunday mutt cost in paper alone wbat the publisher gets for it from first bands, so that the only source of profit left to pay tor composition, labor, and a hundred other things must be made op on the advertising patronage. A news paper, like a steamship or a house, can be made too large and cumbersome for effec tiveness and usefulness. The Great Eastern is a conspicuous example of this kind of ambitious enterprise. Her immense size destroyed her usefulness and the invest ment wrecked the fortunes of her owners. Woilr admiring the great strides made by I >le World newspaper in suc.essful joarna • ism we cannot but put the inquiry, can there not be a reasonable limit lo the s z <of the mode n newspaper and yet preaeiv; ita intrin ic value? The ^e» ï ork iierald imts issue oi Sun day devotei almcst an entire page to inter views with the leading bufinesa men of New York City in reference to the business out look, and the general re-ult is summed up j in this: ' la almost all branches of trade the in dications oi a prosperous season are more favorable than they bare been for some ! tiaif. The demand for goods is greater, the rise in prices is more stable, the orders from country districts are more numerous, the crops are flourishing, extreme cautious ness bas given place to a well advised bold ness—in one word, distrust and misfortune have been driven out of the mercantile field by confidocce an i fortune. It is not to be (apposed, however, that the battle has been bloodless or that the victors see an un clocded future before them. Great a* the victory has been, it cannot, it is maintained, produce permanent prosperity unless a grievous malady, which is eating into the vitals ot buaiuess, be ruthle«sly stamped out by the government physicians. This mala dy is silver coinage, as fostered and pro tected by the mischievous Bland act The representatives of all the great trades, men who have as good a right to be heard on the subject as linkers and financiers, protest with all the force that is in them against the further coinage of the silver dollar. Dollar? No; in their eyes it is a bastard coin, which bas no more right to be called a dollar than it bas to be called a half eov ereign. A dollar, they say, is worth a hun dred cents, and this bogus article isn't wo*th near as much as that What we want is honest money, and if we don't get that it is absurd for as to expect that trade can be prosperous. Bankers and statesmen may write l arned pamphlets about the merits and defects of the Silver bill, bat all we know is that it is not honest and is bound to hart trade as long as it is coined. I As business men everywhere like to heir ' views exchanged on questions that concern tbem, the foregoing is given. CAMERON. Note» ami Go.taip About People at Cameron. 8/xciai to /Ac Rrqist».
