of Directors of the Penitentiary met yester
day. In addition to the regular order ot
business they considered the repairing of
the roof for some ot the buildngs and the
erection of a wa;»r tank on top ot the reser
voir. They will mee" next momh for the pu
ptee ot preparing their aemi-acnual report.
The number of inmates of the Sta'e pcid
on has been stfadily increasing for ni*
months until it has now reached 274 il trd

was 1Ô6. During the winter the numVi
decreased to 218. In 187* the

is very apparent that if the number of con

is believed by some that there are oneort »o

investigation will be made of this muter in

About one fourth of the prisoners are co'
crt-d. Only six are women, and five of
them are-colored. Over twelve wagom are
trade each day ready for market by con
\ict labor. The work is divided up,
and a pattern for each particular
branch of the work is given
