The Number of Guests Comparatively Small, as Usual. The Menus An aliaborate, and One or Two Unusually So—The Arri vals of the Day—Talk of the Offices and Corridors and Per sonal Mention. Proprietor John Ttpbrecht, of the St. Charles Hotel tells a good cow-boy story for ibis part of the country. It was some years ago, ani| one evening early mere walked into his hotel a six footer with a big horse pistol in hand. As ho c;ime through the door lie shout ed to the crowd to the number of about fifteen in the office that he was a cow ! b*>y from Texas and could kill the • whole crowd, and immediately let go . the horse gun, the bullet from which ! made room for considerable putty the i lay in tl * of th room. Mr. 1 to b rev hi was near by, and as his guests ducked behind the stove, chairs and tables, he met the Texas fellow with the remark that he used to be a cow boy also, and let go a right hand blow ' from the shoulders which took the gen ti* man under the left eye, and he feel in a heap on the floor. Later the gen tleman was taken outside on a snow bank for air and the inventiating jury, ot which Mr. Robrocht was toremau, decided that the cow-boy had a fit. Windsor—T. M. L. The small-pox quarantine over tho river kept a good many people from taking their Christmas dinners in Wheeling. The old bachelor boarding at a city bptel is not so bad a person after all. Although the Christmas dinners at the hotels invariably represent the best efforts of chiV' t hef, and are the best and most elaborate meals of the years, the number of dinners is usually very small. There ere a number of reasons for this. Traveling men. as a rule, like to ga home for Christmas, the ordinary list of arrivals is light and many regu lar boarders go out tx> dine with friends. A Cutting AtTray at Hounttaville Which Alight Have Keen Fatal. A very serious, and what might have proven fatal cutting affray, occurred on che 13. & O. A number of people were as sembled at William Meanor’s, who re sides on the river bank, when William Marshall and James Fountain came along, and .Marshall attempted to com mit a nuisance in the presence of the ladies. Joseph Hurd, who was at the holism remonstrated with him, when Marshal] turned on him and commenc ed curs mg and swearing in a most shameful manner, which so aggravated Hurd that he struck Marshall, knock ing h:m down. Marshall drew a knife and cut him twice in the head, cutting one of the arteries, from which the blood flew profusely. He was quite weak from the loss »f blood, but man ag’d to make his way tc Dr. Bruce's office, where t‘he wounds we re dressed. From there he had to be carried on a stretcher. A dispatch from Kenton, Ohio, pays: Exclteim nt regarding the Rayliff-Ken ney fight runs high here, the people being about equally divided on the sub ject. Sheriff Ranney -was in Columbus consulting with Governor McKinley. He was told that the law on the sub* ; ject was very plain, and that if he need ed additional aid. ho should call out the militia. The citizens’ commitr.ee has had warrants issued for the arrest of BayKff and Kenney as soon as they g?t inside the county, and the promoters of the fight have plenty of bondsmen ready to go the»ir bail. The citizens’ committee have offered the Scioto Club $2W) not to hold the contest, but the club will not accept. The Scioto club are very confident that they will have the fight, and this offer of money seems to he a sign of weakening on the part of the c:tiz°ns. One of the preachers la.” evening said that the Mayor, D. M. Df ’.rich. who issued the permits, should be asked :o resign his position. To an outsider, it locks very much as though the dub have the best: of it, and the fight will take place. FITZ WILL TRAIN. El Paso.
