For the Coming Visit of the River
and Harbor Committee
Of Congress—Will be in Wheel
ing on the 14th Inst., and Will be
Entertained With a Banquet.
Movements of the Packets—Local
River News and Notes.
A speial telegram from Washington,
published in another column, gives in
formation of a rather tlisouraging na
ture to the gentlemen who have inter
ested themselves in the movement to
secure a Congressional appropriation
for the permanent improvement of the
upper Ohio. Notwithstanding it ap
pears that nothing may be expected
from the present session of Congress,
tho Pittsburg and Wheeling river men
hope to interest the members of the
Rivers and Harbors Committee to such
an extent as to secure their support of
such a measure as has been contem
plated, if introduced at a more favorable
time.
Mr. C. R. Hart, representing the local
committee, was in Washington last
week, returning Saturday. He confer
red wit it Capt. Dovener and other mem
bers of the River and Harbor tom
mittee. relative to the proposed visit.
As a matter of course, there is some
apprehension that something may oc
cur to cause a change of programme,
but a definite plan has already been
outlined.
The committee will leave \sasning
ton on the evening of March 12th, com
ing to Fairmont over the 13. & (J., thence
proceeding over the Pittsburg branch
to Morgantown. At this point, the
party will board a steamer for Pitts
burg, where the distinguished party
will be handsomely entertained.
On the morning of the 14th the Con
gressional party will board the ele
gant Cincinnati and Pittsburg packet
"Virginia.'' and proceed down the river
to this city, arriving on the evening
of the same day. Their entertainment
here will be tinder the auspices of the
Chamber of Commerce, ami will take
the form of a banquet at one of the
principal hotels.
The party will number probably thir
ty-five persons, several members being
accompanied by their wives or daugh
ters. The ladies will also he invited to
the banquet. It has been definitely set
tled that most of the addresses will he
made by the visitors, although the op
portunity of enlightening the Congress
men upon the condition of affairs in
this immediate section will not he lost.
Every business man in Wheeling will
he invited to attend the banquet, pro
vided he is a member of the Chamber
of Commerce. However, in order that
all may participate, an invitation to
join the Chamber is extended. The
dues are $10 annually, and names
should be sent to Secretary Howard
Hazlett. The Bellaire Board of Trade
will he invited to he represented by a
committee, and Martin's Ferry and
Bridgeport will also be asked to send
representatives.
It is the expectation that the Con
gressional party will go down the river
as far as Parkersburg and return to
Washington via the 13. & 0. It is the
desire, however, that they proceeed as
far as Cincinnati.
