Vl'ILL practice in the Courts of the adjoining counties ** aud {dre particular attention to the collection of W*Un?. novl6-ly A 1 knitent Prisoner. There is a man nan. e.I Dougherty, no*- confined in our county jail for passing counterfeit money. At one time in life he was regarded as an upright, mora! citizen, and no.one man of his acquaintance had finer prospects, or better encouragement to iivc an honest and useful life. Something like a year ago he became associated with a gang of counterfeiters, with whom he entered into the usual disreputable schemes of the profession and was finally detected, arrested and commit ted for trial. lie now fully realizes his situa tion, and reeling the deepest sorrow when con sidering what he is and what he might have been. He has recently written a warning letter to a friend, from which we are at liberly to make an extract: Flee from every appearance of evil, such as bad company of every kind, no matter of what description or character, especially the evil of intoxication, for when liquor is in, wit is driven out. So you are then a fit subject to be operated upon by all those that partake of that abominable stuff, called liquor. 1 can from my own experience testify to the above, that it has led men into difficulties and troubles of different kinds, and in a very short time too, and ^ has been the instigation of my own confinement, and has thrown me culpable to this commonwealth, for which I am truly sorry, and have repented in tears of sorrow to (iod. . Recollect the grave is always hurrying, anil death is sure Put not ol that one thing dreadful till a dying hour, for dying work is hard work, and dying pangs are bard pangs. Have not that to do! when you should have nothing to do. A. K. DoL'oiiKirrv. Tub Fugitive Slave Jackson.?The Zanes ville Courier gives some account of the fugitive slave Jackson, who was recently arrested in that city and taken back to his master. Jackson was claimed as a fugitive from service by Mr. James Jackson, of Clarksburg, Va. lie (the fugitive) has resided in Uelinont county, Ohio, fur three years past, ilis arrest was accom plished as follows, according to the Courier; Some days since a Mr. Honeycutt called on J. C. Simpson, a colored man of this city, and told him that Jackson had been guilty of bastardy with a white girl; that the girl had been driven from the family with whom she had resided, (the same family in which Jackson had lived,) and went to a sister's, who, upon the birth of llie chilli turned her out of doors; that her entire family had discarded her; that the girl was a distant relative of his; that her family were de sirous to remove the stain, as far as possible, and to that end, had concluded, that if they ould marry and remove to Canada, they would furnish them w:th as an outfit. On these representations McSimpson was in duced to accompany Honeycutt to the residence of an old colored woman, and there saw a white giri with a small child, who said that the man Jackson was father to the child; declared her desire to marry him, her confidence in toe offer of her relatives to furnish the money, and that Honeycutt had the money to pay down as srfUti as they were married. Again and again, was McSimpson seen, and was finally induced by Honeycutt to receive $5 for expenses and start on the morning train for Rarnesville to bring Jackson here fur the pur pose of marrying. At Cambridge McSimpson learned that Jackson had stayed over night in that town, but had started on foot for Zmcsviile. ?UcSiiMpson took the next train west; met Honeycutt at the Depot in this city, and advised him that Jackson was on the road. Shortly after, Honeycutt called on McSimpson and proposed that they ride out in a buggy to meet and consult with Jackson about the mat ter. McSimpson started with Honeycutt, met Jackson near Harris' tavern, near the toll gate. I hey all three sat on the ground, Honeycutt sitting between tile two colored men. Jackson was induced by Honeycutt to believe all was light, and assented to the arrangement for mar riage. When they reached Zanesviile, McSimp son left them, they going toward the house of the old colored woman, where the white girl was. Before reaching the house Jackson was arrested. W e have already given an account of what took place afterwards. A Strange Conceit.?The insane often enter tain the most ludicrous idea of their own condi tion. Ihere is a man in an asylum in one of the neighboring states who became insane in consequence of a failure in business, lie ex plains the reason of his incarceration as follows: "1 am here becaose of a mere mistake in busi ness. I was engaged during the winter in mosquitoes' wings, which I expected to sell in the summer. I had ten thousand of them on hand when the season opened, but unfortunately I had forgotten to make them in pairs. They were all left hand wings, and consequently I lost the sale of them and was compelled to sus pend payment!" He relates this story with an earnestness which testifies to the sincerity of his own belief in tne explanation.?lioston, Journal. An old maid named Martih has just died in France, leaving to Lamartine, in her Will, all her property, valued at $40,000. She leaves broth ers and sisters in a state of pciiiry. M. Lamar tine has very properly refused the succession ir. favor of the needy relatives. While on the subject, I may mention that we hear but little now of the national subscription in favor of the poet. Figaro maliciously reports or coins a word of his in regard to this subscription, which is too good to tie lost : "I am going to hold on to the subscription," said Lamartine to a friend, "and we'll see who will give out first, France or me!" A New Chess Pkoiuov.?There is a youth in Mobile, Alabama, who is certainly hiding his light under a bushel. A few days since, he played over one of Morplsy a.id Anderson's panics, to the point where the latter resigned, and had the curiosity to follow if out to the final and closely impending checkmate. Hut the longer lie played the farther off the checkmate appeared to get, and "the first thing I knew," says he, "Anderson Won the game; and thed ? d fool had resigned twenty moves back." A singular occurrence, says the Albany Knicleeboetrer, of the 27th, was 'liscovered in a vault attached to one of our burial grounds on Sunday last. It was that of a female, who was deposited therein for dead some two months since, being found, on opening the coffin, to be lying on her side with one hand under the head. From this it %vas evident that the woman was alive when placed there, and awaking from the trance into which she liad fallen, endeavored to cxtricate herself from ^ier entombment. This, of course, was an impossibility; the cover was not on'.y screwed down tightly, but the spa-e was too contracted to allow of even an effort. It was evideni, however, that the unfortunate woman became convinced of this fact, and concluded to die. She therefore took the easy posture in which she was found, and breathed her lust. The thought that, they had buried her while yet alive set her friends almost crazed. The body was that of a woman who formerly rcsi ded in the Bowery. The father and mother of the deceased had just arrived from the old country last week, and were brought to the vault to see their child. The scene is related as heart-rending. This is another instance of | too hasty burial. We have often heard of simi lar cases to this in other parts of the country, ] but none in this neighborhood. Ax "Indecent" Pictoub nv an American Ar tist iiki.d at $7,<'0O.?Mr. Bigelow, of the N. Y. Post, relates in a letter from Home, the fol lowing: Page's Venus, which was sent to Paris for the | coming exhibition, has been rejected for "hide cency." Such a 'ieeision ought to make Page's | fortune, if he will charge for a sight of his work, for the world will be naturally curius to see any thing which the French artists pronounce too indecent for the public eye. f have not seen this Venus, but there seems to be but one opi nion here among those who have, that it is one of the finest pieces of flesh painting which lias been seen sii.ee the days of. Vitian. Nor is it improbable that it was intended to challenge a comparison with the A'enus in the Tribune at Florence. The price of the picture is $7,000, a large sum to a.-k for a modern painting in these days, and shows the estimate which Page him self places upon it as a work of art.
