Everybody?remarks the joker?is eager to go a soldiering for the good of his country. It is said that the military contagion has already reached Lord Derby, and that lie has been ar dently striving to obtain a Majority, by pur WEclip the following sporting intelligence from the Louisville Courier: "Seven up.?This 'noble game' has lately been brought into public notice by a matched game, the preliminaries of which has just been arranged, to bo played by telegraph, between John 1). McGoodwin, of Paducah, and Gen. Faxon, of Cairo. The regular slakes are twen ty live cents in money, a bottle of Bond's whis key, and tho championship of Jackson's Pur chase; a Barlow knife forfeit Charley Smedley has been designated as bottle holder, and CoJ. J. C. Noble as stockholder for the Paducah champion, while Messrs. Phillips and Jennings will perform the same offices for the champion of Southern Illinois; The excitement is intense and on the increase. Bets are ranging at about. three yellow dogs to two Cairo lots on the Pa ducah player. We shall keep our readers posted." I.ATEK. Tun Result of the Gkeat Seven Up Game.? The great match which was to have been played between John I). McGondwin, of Paducah, and Gen. Faxon, of Cairo, was comtucnced accord ing to arrangements, but, we regret to say, broke up iu a row. The circumstances, as de tailed by our special reporter, atu as follows; Cblrf Jn.ilc. Mnrahhll. HIS CITAKACTEK A3 A MAS AND A LAWVEIt. The Century newspaper has not its equal I among tho Weeklies of the country, as we have before had occasion, substantially, to say?and among the many super-excellent articles" which have, during the brief period !of its existence adorned its broad, beautiful columns, none are J more to our mind than the two contributions on 'the personal traits of John Marshall," written | by some gentleman in Richmond. It is but rarely wo have read anything that | has captivated us more than this extract: ITis intellect?but what shall I say of thai?? Superlatives are regarded with distrust. And yet superlatives are necessary in speaking of ? this great man. The brain of the boy who grew ? up in the obscure fields of Fauquier, nndoubt- t edly has stamped with an ineffaceable mark the ' entire political philosophy of the American Con stitution. He found that instrument tho subject. ? of heated contention between jarring factions 1 when it tottered and waved in the struggle?ho ' fixed its foundations in the eternal rock, and 1 lef his name engraved upon it There maybe j a difference of opinion upon the justice of his I I Federal views?of the immense mental power i brought to hear upon tho questions, there can | scarcely be two opinions. 1 le was not n very learned man. He would say, I am told, in the I Supreme Court, sometimes, "Brother Story, that is my opinion; I don't know that it is law; you know about that?but it is right." And of this Court, and of ils great judge.-, he was i - tellectual dictator. His strength lav in his as tounding acumen. "No matter what the ques tion," says Wirt, "though ten times more knot ty than tho 'gnarled oak,' the lightning of heav en is tiotinore rapid or resistless, than his aston ishing penetration. Nor does the exercise of it seem locust him an effort." This writer srivs else where that his vast genius trampled with dis dain upon the flowers of fancy, which he did not lelish; but this is a mistake. Not the least I of the \. onderful traits of this man was tho exquisite appreciation of, and love for, poetry, wl.ieh was united with this inflexible genius fur I logic. Ue reasoned in such a way as to "ex- ' tract the whole matter, the kernel of inquiry, ( unbroken, clean and entire, without a superliu- i ous thought or even word," says Francis Gil- ? mer; but nothing is more certain than that all i this was accomplished against the grain, llis l I first and last love was poetry. lie road it with delight, in his touching voicc, to his little wile to lie, at Yorktown in his early manhood?he read it as fondly in his old age. Such a man could not possibly be indifferent to the liohle and elevated. Ill's feelings were as warm as his uiind was powerful. Rightly viewed, his is an organization which should excite the admiration of every real lover of greatness. In hard mus I culnr force of the dialectical intellect, he was confessedly the first man of his epoch. In kindness and sweetness of feeling, he was un surpassed by any of his contemporaries. Last of all, as the crowning grace anil true "diadem of beauty," sui mounting the whole, was the profound and childlike religious faith and trust I in our Savior which characterized him. 1 be I lieve he did not commune, but am not sure.? What is certain is this: that he leaned on the arm of the Master of all, in life and death, and submitted his great intellect to the teachings of the Gospel, as a child learns the lesson which its father gives it. I have written this much about one of our great names, because we have in the character of John Marshall that rare and beautiful combination of line elements which make him a worthy standard for the youth of all time. Let them think of him, and measure his greatness. He was not only a famous man ?lie was a gentleman. It is hard to be a gen tleman in this world?for the ingredients, so to speak, of that noblest of all characters, arc honesty, kindness, sincerity, independence?a love for our brethren, aiid disdain for the "pretences* of life, and all the miserable shams which environ us. This man was not honorable and venerable because he was Chief Justice of the United States lie was worthy of ail reverence and love because he was John Marshall. He did his duty in every position he occupied to the best of "the ability which God had given him. That ability was splendid--?its triumphs supremely great. But the extent of his achievement is not his glory. It lies in the motives of his career, lie assumed the judicial ermine, as he put on the hunting shirt and shouldered his ritle in ths Revolution ?to do his duty. His memory remains to us, as the memory of a great and pure man, a model citizen of our grand Republic?one of those names which shine so brightly that oblivion can never sweep over them. He stands like a light house on a rock bound coast; to keep him be fore the eyes is to safely steer into the happy and benificcut harbor. It is the pride of Vir ginia that he rose from her soil?from tho plain, old sturdy blood of a rustic planter?but he belongs to all America, and to the world. Hie parties, with their rospcctivu seconds, Col. Noble and Onpt. Charles Smoiily, met, shook nnnds and commenced the game. They cut or dual, and the Paducah champion won that ]ue.-tionnble advantage. Faxon stood his hand tnd lod out. The utmost silence was maintain >d until the cards were nil played out, when the olio wing dialogue and soune took place: McG.?"I'm high." Faxon.?"You most generally'are; but I am low." McG.?"Yes, d d low." This so incensed Faxon that ho immediately Jrnnk up all the stakes left by the holders, and retorted: "Rut I don't live in Paducah." ., Mr. i>IcGoodwin, who, up to this moment hadi maintained his serenity, became excited <at this remark, and in sheer desperation drank n full horn of Cairo whisky. Under the influence of he drug he coldly asserted that Faxon owned a Cairo town lot. Human endurance was at an ?Mill. Faxon laid down tho cards and pulled "wo large handfulls of hair out of the top of Mc Goodwin's head, and the tight became general. When our reporter left, the air for some distance nround the contestants was filled with hair, ?surses,'old shoes, and two empty bottles. The Citml result is not know.-i. All this took place by telegraph. > . \Vit?LlNds. ?Noah is thought to have had on hoard a supply of "Kxterminator," from the Tact that for nearly six weeks he was without seeing Ary-rnt. We always did like the "chnrch-going hclle." Bald headed men take a joke the uioro ejisily, because they are not at the trouble of "getting it through their hair." A young "buck," now a days, is curiously compounded; he has a hearer'on his head, "n ?jnnt-ee on his chin, bids on his hands, rnl.res 011 His legs (and ffop-skin also) casts *hir/1.1' eyes, ?tnd is looked upon by h s </i)f-ting duck as deer it any price. ? fjo.iton Post.
