Crop Report a Disappointment Stock* Recede Quickly and Losa Prac tically All the Cains Made In the Day. NEW YORK. July 10.—Disappoint ment at the government crop report, which wae Issued shortly before tho close of the market, caused stocks to recede quickly, after a display of al moat uniform strength from the open lng. Tho losses thus sustained vir tually cancelled the gains of 1 to 2 points through the list of the active stocks. The character of the crop re port was offset to sumo extent by the monthly statement of the copper producers and of the 1'nlted States Steel Corporation's unfilled orders, which were unexpectedly favorable. Cnlted States Steel and the copper shares, however, yielded with the re mainder of tho list at the close. The figures for spring wheat and corn were tho most discouraging fea ttires of the government’s statement. Previous estimates of the condition of spring wheat were usually about or 7", in place of the government's figure of 7H K. The condition of corn was two points under many estimates It was pointed out, however, that since July 1. the date to which the government report refers, the lack of rain, which was largely responsible for the damage, has been relieved In many sections, and that present con ditions are sustantially better than ■ those of ten days ago. when the of ficial figures were collected. Tho de rllno In storks was due In part to the expectations of operators who had bought heavily in anticipation of a more bullish statement The Increase ,,f J47,OnO*tons In the unfilled orders of the 1'nlted States' Steel Corporation between June 1 an.l July 1 Indicates an unexpectedly largo amount of new business. The decrease of more than K.r.on.ono pounds In copper stocks was larger than w ns looked for. bringing down the total to the lowest point In sev eral months. The bond market was firm.
