IMPROVEMENT IN THE NEW YORK
STOCK MARKET YESTERDAY
NEW YORK. Feb 14-There was
a distinct Improvement today In the
tone of the stock market The down
ward movement of recent days was
checked, and there was no trace of
the nervousness which wms evident at
times yesterday Bear traders renewed
their attack early in the day but were
able to make little headway except in
the copper group. Operators on the
ahort side apparently were less sure
of their positions and evidence that
the market was offering resistance to
bear selling led to considerable cover
ing. The market hardened and during
. the latter part of the day rose well
above yesterday's close, with 1'nion
1’acLflc and steel In the forefront of the
advance.
Before the close there was a re-ao
tion and final prices showed small and
Irregular changes. News of the gov
ernment's further prosecution of the
' anthracite trust" was followed by a
break of 20 points in Lackawanna.
Definite news from Mexico and In
regard to the threatened strike of east
ern railway firemen was lacking, and
speculators were disposed to aw-ait
these developments. Total sales 303.
Bonds with a few exceptions were
heavy. Total sales par value 12,030,
POO.
U. S. Bonds unchanged on call.

DUNN'S REVIEW

NEW YORK. Feb. 14.—Dub's re
| view tomorrow win say:
Business maintains its position of
1 steady, conservative expansion, ss yet
I unaffected in any material respect.
; by the stirring events happening or
impending in many parts of the world.
• Although the renewed war in the Bal
; kan peninsula continues to pnt s strain
i upon the International markets, it is
{rot worthy that the situation in Paris
i seems easier. European crop advices
; are somewhat disappointing but tbs
alter wheat outlook In this country
; Is favorable in spite of considerable
j snow deficiency.
The weather In the west and south
| west has recently been quite severe
! and this accounts for some falling off
i In the rate of gain in railroad earnings
I While the eastern railroads are threat
( ened with a strike of firemen, there is
I still a prospect of amicable adjustment
j by arbitration. Railroad purchases of
equipment continue to be the leading
leature of the iron and steel trade,
j which maintains Its favorable aspects.
. Oraln prices have tended downward
but cotton displays a firm undertone,
j l>omestlc conditions are against wheat
values and the markets are paiably In
I used of support, w hich has been de
I rived to some extent from the situa
\ tlon abroad. European crop advices
; are discouraging in certain respects
. yet the outlook at home is generally
I iavorable.
