CHARLESTON. W. \a.. Feb. 17.
Twelve unavailing ballots were taken by the Republican members
of the legislature in caucus to-night on the United States senatorship.
Adjournment was taken at midnight until to-morrow night, when the

The Young luiks had entered under an agreement that no candi

icsult on ia.h of the twelve ballots showed little change over the
strength exhibited bv the various candidates on joint ballots.
Elkins was tin high man of the evening, with 21 votes. Mann was
a tin e second, reaching 20 votes on several occasions. James S. I.aktn
was sprung as a dark horse, but the best showing he made was seven
votes. Bloch. Fans and Arbenz- of Ohio, stood consistently with Hub
baid. Mearne aNo voted tor Hubbard on most of the ballots .Marshall
voted lor Scott. Weiss stood with White, though he gave a compliment
ary vote to both M. C. Ogden and Senator Mearne. The expected
fusion of the .Mann and Elkins forces failed to develop, hut rumor
has it that it is vet to tome. Senator England, formerly one of
Edwards most earnest supporters, went over to Mann to-night.
Mating that he had held to Edwards until the “late unpleasantness."
but felt now that Mann was the best qualified candidate in the field, i
