Kor the first full session since Septem
ber 5, transactions failed to record a
totu.1 of one million shares, although
coining within hailing distance of that
figure.
As a matter of fact, almost one-third
of the aggregate transactions of S20.00U
?shares occurred in the last hour, alto
gether at the expense of Quoted values,
the general list and war Issues in par
ticular declining somewhat abruptly
on circumstantial rumors suggesting
danger of a recurrence of recent subma
rine warfare in nearby waters.
During the forenoon and in the inter
mediate period the list gave frequent
indications of recovering from the ap
prehension manifested on Wednesday.
Munitions and equipments, together with
shipping shares, were then decidedly
stronger, grains in these various groups
extending from 2 to almost 5 points.
These advances were fortified by some
striking gains among rails, including
Norfolk and Western, which ascended
to the new record of 140%, with 1 to 3
point advances in leading coalers.

West Virginia as well as uhio oil fields
of company. I-Jarly in the week it was
announced that six new wells had been
drilled in in 10 days. A dispatch from
the company's office received in thu:

24 hours made 415 barrels. This mau.es
it the largest well in the West Virginia
field by 1 1?0 barrels. Madden well ,\u. 3
made 100 barrels in the first -1 hours,
