" | Field .Marshal von Mackensen's! troops have crossed the Mnnube from Bulgarian territory to Zimnitza, and are in touch near Alexandria. 47 miles I southwest of Bucharest, with the j forces of General von Falkenhayn's . army from Craiova. All aloug t ho j front on the Wallachian plains, east of] the Alt river, the Rumanians are inj lliglu, bu ruing towns behind them, j says Berlin. To i he north, on the heights of Our-! tea-Mearges. in the region of Pragosla- ? vele, northeast of Campulung. and in! Western Moldavia, near Oituz. the Rtt- 1 manians are offering strong resistance j t<> the southward advance of the Tcu-i tons. On all these sectors attempt. | by the Austro-Ge rmans to advance have been held back by the Ruma nians. As yet there lias been no indication of the arrival of Russian reinforce ments to aid the Rumanians on the Wallachiaus plains, but the Russo-Ru manian troops in Dobrudja are active, possibly in an endeavor to push back j the invaders to the Tchernavoda-Con- , stanza railway line. Sotia reports that' this reinforced army intended a gen or- ] al attack along the entire front, but j has been compelled to coutine itself to j partial attacks. No Activity in Macedonia. In the Macedonian theatre bad weather prevails and there has been no infantry action except on the left wing of the entente allied lines, whore the Italians have made further prog ress toward Trnova. near the Monastir Presba lake road, according to Paris. This statement, as regards the gain, is contradicted by the Solia war oflice. which says an Italian attack here was! repulsed and that the attackers lost a j large quantity of war materials. Sofia j also denies a recent French report that the French had captured the town of Mobromir, savins the Bulgarians are fully in control there. The French front also is experienc ing another spell of inclement weather, and except for small. attacks a' various points, little activity has been uis plaved by either side. There has been considerable artil lerv firing along the eastern from, at various places frotn the Riga region to the Carpathians, with the Germans the aggressors, and also on the Austro Italian front, with the Austrians on the ! initiative. i Situation Not So Bad LONDON. Nov. L'7. :i:0S a. m.? Al-i though the commentators in the morn ing newspapers today do not. attempt todisguise the fact that the position of the Rumanians has become very much worse and that they are sorely! in need of succor, the weightiest writ- J ers, in their opinions, refuse to be pes-j simistic. These writers maintain that Ruma nia's position may be better than the map shows, and ibe fact that the Cen tral passes are still being held and ibat the Rumanian soldiers are fight ing everywhere with desperate cour age. is taken to show that, the morale of the army is unimpaired. It is contended that, as long as this is the case the Rumanians may yet I turn the tables, as did the Allies on the Marne in 3914. the situation then having many of the general features [of the present position of Rumania. Confidence is also expressed that re-inforcafuents from the Rumanian | northern army and the Russians soon must arrive for the aid of the threa:- j ened armies in the south. The sudden ! rise in the Danube in consequence of the thaw also is regarded as a factor1 which may prove very awkward for J the Germans. Comment Optimistic I Some of the comment even ap proaches optimism, it being contend ed that the Germans in their haste to conquer Rumania have actually weakened themselves through the ne cessity of drawing men from other j fronts for the Rumanian campaign. Although the move of the Germans across the Danube ?s characterized as a brilliant one. it is declared it will he proved 10 be unsound from a strategic standpoint. The only really lugubrious comment appears in the Daily Mail which ac cepts the details of the Rumanian re treat as true. Prof. Abel Resigns IjONDON. Nov. How this message was brought to the border through the Villa lines, which are known to encir cle the state capital to the north and northeast is not known, but it is be lieved to have been sent by automo bile courier to Marfa. as it would have been impossible to cover this great distance on horseback. The telegraph line at military head quarters is not working further south than Suaz and the runner who was sent from that station to Chihuahua City to ascertain conditions had not returned tonight.
