ELKS' PATRIOTIC PROGRAM THRILLS GREAT GATHERING! Hon. W. T. Dixon Delivers Fine Ad- | dress ? Dr. F. L. Hupp in Tell- j ing Appeal for Red Cross. The Elks' club auditorium was well i tilled last evening when Wheeling lodge No. 2S, H. P. 0. K., staged its \ long anticipated patriotic mass meet- j ing. The patriotic sentiment and i spiril of the Elks reflected in the de- 1 jightful program made the event one I long to be remembered. Members of the Grand Army of tlie Republic, Ladies of the G. A. R., Worn en's Relief corps and Sons of Veter ans were guests of the Elks. A pretty recognition was paid the defenders of the country in ihe days of the rebel-] lion and their kindred organizations. I whose purpose is to perpetuate t h<s I memory of those heroes and to keep | aflame the fire of patriotism which | caused them to respond so nobly m| the time of their nation's need. Many other friends of the Elks enjoyed ihe program. The Hon. \V. T. Dixon of Martins Kerry, n member of the Elks lodge of the Ohio side city, delivered the ad dress of the evening. In connection with am eloquent discussion of oui crisis he paid a pretty tribute to American patriotism and to the genu inely patriotic spirit of the order of Elks and their support of every pa triotic sentiment and act in every cri sis that confronts the country. Redd Cross Appeal. I.)r P. 1.. Hupp filled an important place in the program in an eloquent appeal for the Red Cross. His story of the heroic acts of this great Ameri can institution in times of war and its devotion to the relief of the needy in times of peace or catastrophe thrilleo his heaters to a determination to ex tend more hearty co-operation to the humanitarian organization. The music was decidedly patriot lt> and inspirational. Instrumental music was furnished by the Premier orches tra. Equally as delightful were the vocal selections by Mrs. Elsa Gun dling Duga, Mr. David Crawford and Mr. W'iil Leach. The. invocation was pronounced by the Rev. Claude Porter Terry, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, who offered a fervent prayoi for the hiehesl . type of patriotism among men ana a speedy restoration of peace. The concluding number was "Star Spangled Manner." sung to the strain* of orchesi ra music. The assembly rose when ihe orchestra struck up the strains of the song and the vol ume and spirit of the song reflected the sentiment which had been aroused anew by the demonstration staged by l he Elks.
