Texas Has a Little
Plant Called a
Compass Flower
Because in all weathers, Winter and Summer,
it turns its flower to the north; rains beat upon
it and snows cover it, but it never swerves from
its fixed direction.
There are men and boys like that.
Not long ago a lad picked up a letter that a
lady had dropped in a street car, and, raising his
hat, handed it to the lady with its address turned
down.
A gentleman sitting nearby said to another:
"I'll bet you that boy had a good mother."
The trifles of conduct in this store every day
tell people what kind of a store this is.
Hundreds and hundreds of Wheeling people

"White walking across the Baltimore '
and Ohio bridge at lOeorgetown. about i
two miles west of Bellaire. Saturday
night. Jesse Reed. a miner, was struck
by a west bound passenger train and
knocked into McMahon'a creek, beneath
the bridge.
No one witnessed the accidcnt and
Reed was compelled to remain In tho
rrcek in a few laches of water in a help
less condition until Sunday morning
when he was discovered by the crew of
an east bound freight train. He was
picked up m a semi-conscious condition
placed in the cabooso and brought to
'Bellaire and removed to the city hos
pital. Dr. W. E. Klser was callcd to
attend him.
Reed's condition was reported gravo
yesterday and friends believe that he
cannot recover. The accident occurred
whiln. Reed was on his way to his home
at McClalnsville. where he is employed
In one of the mines.
Dip* Operating.
Dips are operating In Bellaire. First
they attempted to operate on the street
cars between this city at id Wheeling,
but the scheme failed. They came to
Rellaire. owing to the crowds that)
thijonged the streets as a result of the!
patriotic demonstration Kiveu by Italian J
organizations their operation might have
been a success had they not been dis
covered.
While In the act of picking tho pocket
of Tom Bennett, well known local man. i
Officer James Crogan arrested a nwn|
by the namn of >lcA?idrews. who gave |
h:3 home at East IJverpool. The act |
was witnessed by the officer and two
prominent local men.
He was ?? taken to the city jr.il and i
when searched by tho officers $118 was I
found sn his pockets. H? was lodged in j
jail and will be arraigned before Mayor.
Wassman today. Two pals of ilcAti- 1
drews made their escape.

violent death. Carl Geiehell. a brother,
was murdered in Cherry alley about t >?!
years ago. while his father. William
Cetchell. was . instantly killed when
struck by an automobile aboul four
years ago. The dead man is survived ;
by his mother, two brothers and one
sister.
Patrol Aided Police.
The police automobile patrol which '
was received Saturday proved of val
uable assistance to the force Saturday
night. The first call came from Ken
sou's Ferry, about 7:30 o'clock, and ? ne
run to the place was made in seven
minutes. A bloody battle was between
a number of l'oles. Seven of tho bunch
were arrested. Others made iheir es
cape in the darkness. One of die men
was so badly beaten about the fact that
it was necessary to send an ambulance j
to haul him to the city building where
Ills injuries were dressed by I>r. Kiser.
During the evening about ? 15 arrest*
were made. All will be arraigned bo
fore Mayor Wassman tod.iy.
