JKk ^ To the Voters of West Virginia: Y Trie undersigned desire earnestly to call the attention ot the "people ? of this State to the fact that tlxe prill ? cipal aim of the enemies o? "tax 2 reform" is to defeat Hon. W. 2 Dawson, the Republican nominee for governor. His defeat will be inter2 preted as a fatal defeat of the move Si? meat for a better and juster system 2 ?f taxation. To accomplish Mr. Dow2 son's defeat the Democratic managers 2 are industriously seeking to convey 2 the imiiression that Mr. Dawson has 2 "shifted' his ground, that: he has 2 changed his position oil the taxation 2 question since his nomination, and ? has sold out to the corporations." ^ These same .Democratic managers are O spreading throughout the State, by ^ printed, matter and: by hired agents, ^ the most shameful misrepresentations ^ of the now tax laws enacted by the ^ late. special session of the LegiSla0. ture. gg The undersigned earnestly urge & upon every taxpayer of the.State who ^ favors reformation of otir laws coil^ cerning taxation touphold these laws and to rally to the support of Mr. ^ Dawson. Do not be deceived.- These gp laws are In the interest of the whole body of the people. Mr. Dawson, by his long service in ^ public life, is eminently fitted to discharge the duties of the governor's office. He is honest, sincere, well ^ equipped, conservative and just. He will treat every citizen and interest Q justly. His defeat would be a crushP ing blow to the cause of honest and ^ just taxation. p. G. \V. ATKINSON, gj A. B. WHITE, p W. P. I-IUBBARD. a GEO. A. FIVE TO ONE THE ODDS ON ROOSEVELT. NEW YORK. Oct. 26.?There was practically no Parker money in sight on the Broad street curb yesterday, where election betting is carried on. As a result the odds on Roosevelt became more firmly established at a 5 to 1 basis. In the contest between Judge Herrick and Lieutenant Governor Higgins the odds stood at 10 to 9 on Higgins. On the State contest between President Roosevelt and Judge Parker the odds lengthened to 2 to 1. Allen McGraw bet $5,000 to $1,000 on Roosevelt with Dobbs & Howell: C. H. Smith bet C. R. Hammerslough $5,000 against $1,000; Park C. IVood bet $2,500 to $500. These bets practically exhausted the Parkers funds on the Broail street curb and the best bid at the close was 1 to t! on the Democratic candidate, made by C- E. _ ChartrancL BALTIMORE & OHIO RAILROAD Very Low Rate Sunday Excursion Tickets Cn Sale May 15. They blame the Democratic nit agement at the national headquartc in New Vorit, and August Belmc conies in for a large. share of t complaint. . They claim that he b turned 'down the most prominent m in the party, and- point to his tre ment of former Senator Smith, New Jersey, claiming that by 1 course toward that Democrat, bo li lost Sew Jersey to the Deraocra The complaints, against Chairm Taggart are also numerous and lor many of the leaders claiming that wanted the whole campaign fund f Indiana, and refused to go into 1 ojvn State until he had received ?6 000, and now the story goes that : has sent an ultimatum that unle $10.(JO() more is forthcoming soon 1 will return to New Turk and thrc up his hands in the Hoosier Stat The same authorities are claimir ihatj Colonel Guffey, of Pennsylvani is trying to persuade Mr. Belmont sink this additional $40,000 in tl hopeless State of Indiana, so as keep Taggart home at Indianapol until after election. The returning Democrats on seem agreed on one thing, and th is that Parker will obtain the li votes of the Solid South, and th does not include Maryland or We Virginia. Some of the Democra are still claiming Nevada and Mo tana, and are now putting Rho< Island in the doubtful: column. TIl< claim that "Billy" Sheehan, who hi had personal charge of the cam pail in Ehode Island, now says that Pa ker will carry the State, because 1 (Sheehan) has been making a car paign among the French Canadit population, and is having speake: address them . in their native tongu It is estimated that there are 13,01 French Canadian voters in Prov dence alone. The big leaders, such as Guffe John R. Mckean, former Senate James Smith, John Sharp Wlllian and Senator Bailey, are said to hat become so disgusted with the wa the Democratic campaign has bee managed that they have crawled 01 from under to leave the responsibi ity on other shoulders. William and Bailey have refused emphatica ly to accept any more speaking date from the national committee. John R. McLean has returned t Washington, and is spending his tim automobiling and not worrying abou politics. The same returning leader say that Ilemry Gassaway Davis als sees the handwriting on the wall, an is now conducting his campaign s that he may have a say in disposim of the Senatorshlp of West Virgin! if that State goes Democratic. H has virtually given up all hope of pre siding bver the Senate as Vice Pi-ef idem, and now his ambit ion is to d? feat the re-election of Senator Scot and come back to the Senate as hi successor. The fact, however, is tha is almost an impossibility becaus there are a doaen or more hold-ove Republican State senators, and n one believes that the Democrats cai possibly obtain a sufficient numbe in the coming election to make i Democratic majority.
