Though L 'tho election of the Renuhlican ticket f bad been, a foregone conclusion for ;several weeks there have been those "who doubted and some were willing i'\ to be in the doubting class until midnight last night. Then all room for "unbelief had ceased to exist and the whole United States was willing to accept the facts and most of the in; habitants rejoiced. ; The American people like to know -a thing for certain and many gathered on the streets at an early hour last , . evening to hear the news. Enthusiastic Republicans and anxious Denio,-erats thronged the streets, eash side i -cheering for its candidates. As is al' ways the case, a great deal depended j|p| upon New York. Being the home of two leading candidates of the 1 . campaign, it would, to a great extent, J -ahow which way the Presidential wind i -was blowing. The first returns from New York V , showed up in favor of Herrick, Demi -ocratic candidate, for governor. This : caused some uneasiness on the part L -of the Republicans and made the r. "Democrats .hilarious. The up-State I . returns as usual showed that the Ref publican ticket was ahead. Soon the city districts were heard from and the New York World led by conceding j the Slate to Roosevelt. We were : next nearly tickled to death by the I .following: "The New York Sun says f ^everything indicates that Roosevelt has carried New York by an enor- j annus plurality, exceeding McKinley's in 1S09. Looks like a Republican ..Landslide." ? In order to be in the lead -the New York World next conceded jthe election of Higgles, Republican ^candidate for governor of that State. Roosevelt then began to lead In the returns' from the city districts of the metropolis and the Brooklyn Daily ' 12agle, Democratic, recognized the inevitable and announced that Roose volt had been elected President of . the Xfnited States and that Higglns was mils Ha^ 3? ft? This bit or news intermingled with that of the overwhelming Republican majorities from Maine. Pennsylvania and Ohio, sent many of Ihe people home satisfied, others to he saved from humiliation. Then the New York World conceded Roosevelt a plurality of 250.000 in New York State and a plurality of 150,000 for Higgins. That was enough for that State and even the Democrats were convinced. Next came forth the World saying that, the next House of Representatives will he Republicans by from 25 to 30 majority. Then the same paper gave Roosevelt 325 electoral votes and 3 51 to Parker. Then the New York Journal dispelled the clouds of doubt hanging over Illinois, New Jersey. West Virginia and Wisconsin and handed them over to Roosevelt without even having the concession disputed by the Democrats. Connecticut was conceded to Roose- I velt by 20,000 and Utah and Colorado sent out good reports. At 10:40 P. M. Herrick sent to Governor elect I Higgins, of New York, the following: "Please accept my congratulations," which of course he did. Indiana and Montana reported for Republicanism and there were no more doubtful States, and Parker was left nothing but the Solid South. Most of the oth- 1 er States have permanently joined ' the Republican column and it is the 1 final contest In many for the political supremacy. New York. Mew York gave McKinley a plurality of 143,606 but was considered doubtful this year, being the homo of both the Presidential candidates. The Mew Yorlc World's estimate of 250,00 plu- * ralitv for Roosevelt shows how far 1 I it was doubtful. r West Virginia. g West Virginia was considered doubtful because of its being the hoine n of Vice Presidential Candidate* Davis e wlio could easily produce a bar'l with ^ a million in It (but he didn't). This c State gave McKinley a plurality of 21,022 which the returns show will t be increased this year. The State will Q remain in the Republican column and a never again be considered doubtful. , .;v.; ; 'v'v'"'-'. - :! ROOSEVELT'S AND DAWSON'S MAJORITIES WILL REACH INTO THE HUNDREDS CONSIDERABLY. The returns are slow in coming from Tie different precincts in Marlon ;ounty and at six o'clock this morning 1 here were yet eight voting places vhich had not heen heard from. From : lie returns so far It is estimated that ' he whole Republican ticket has been 1 ilected. Wm. M. 0. Dawson has car- 1 led the county from 700 to 1,000 and 1 he majorities of the candidates on tlie ' tepublican county ticket will range ' rom 200 to TOO. From present indi- s :atlons Harry Shaw and the whole < icliet has been elected. In most in- 2 tances the dictrict officers on the Re- * 'ubllcan ticket have been elected. 1 The Republicans are proud of the J howing that they have made. All 1 orporations in the county of any 1 iote were fighting the ticket and the ntire Democratic force and money i .-as centered on one man. If they 1 annot elect their man by such work I here is no use for them to ask any- -v hing more at the hands of the voters I f tills county. Here in Fairmont the i mount of money paid by the Demorats far exceeded anything of the ind in the history of the city. Yet . seems that the Voters showed of 1 'hat they are made by voting for the / arty which has brought them pros- c erity. v It Is true that a great deal of e Swept 1 he Victor smiling i JVIIdnlghi |man Co s imv RPPIIRI IP.AM U LL! Yet this same dollar was earned under Republican policies. And this dollar was multiplied many fold to-day. It has been estimated that the Democrats spent from $30,000 to $40,000 in hard cash in Marion county to-day. It was the most shameful work ever perpetrated in the county. It is only just to say that the Republicans had some money, but they were not prepared to meet bids of from ten to twenty dollars per vote, as was found in numerous cases to have been offered by Democrats. But notwithstanding this desperate effort :o capture the county, the Republicans withstood their tempting offers a hundreds of Instances and the result is as above stated. We have elected every man on the ticket by a good safe majority, with the possible exception of Harry Shaw, against whom unusual activity was made. 3ut we shall not give up his election mtil the full vote is counted and the -esult positively shown. The following voting precincts had lot yet been heard from at presstlme: Hotter Building and Burt's Tannery, tfannington; Bunner's Ridge, First vard Moyor's office, Nuzum's Mills, "'airview, West Monongali and Farmngton.
