Hidalgo, Tex., Sept. 12: The Hidalgo pnblic schooi reopened its regular session last Monday, with a fair attendance of scholars, with Miss Alice Dougherty as principal assisted by her sister, Miss Lillian S. Doughert'. The machinery ordered for the newsunar mill for Sheriff Clnsner's plantation is hourly expected to arrive at Brazos by schooner and will be brought up here by wagons A petition to the post-master gen eral was circulated here some I'Pxv months ago, asking for the estab lishment of a daily mail service Rio Grande to Brownsville. The petition was thoroughly circulated and signed by all citizens wishing a daily mail service, which will be a great benent tor some ot our citizens living on the said route. It is to be hoped that the service will be established. A celebration in honor of Mex ico's Independence day will take place at Reyimsa, Mexico, on Sun day and Monday uex', in the way of speaking, parade and also a sere nade on a mam plaza, A grand fiesta is anuounsed to take place at the Havana ranch, this county, ofi Sunday and Mon day also in honor of the same event. District court will convene here the 30th. inst. The river here has been on a rise fur the past few days, aad an eight foot rise is coming down from Laredo. The mission school here, con ductedby Harry Miller, was opeu ed on Sept. 2, with a fair attend ance of pupils. Farmers report hard times, their crops having proved a total failure on account of the long drouth. Cotton is now coming is and sell ing to our merchants at 75 cents for an arroba, or 25 pounds. Corn is retailing here at 50 cents an almud, which is hard on our poor people. There are only four prisoners at Hotel Closner, The coun public schools throughout tbejvarious district have re-opened Some of our watercart men about town are quite independent, de manding as high as 12 to IS cents for a barrel of water. PERSONALS. Miss Hettie S. Dougherty, after spending a few days with her sis ters, on her return from San An tonio, left for home at Brownsville Saturday. Miss AliceS. Dougherty, prin cipal of the Hidalgo public school, accompanied by Master John Clos ner, jr., arrived from Brownsville Monday, after a short visit to ier mother and sisters there. Mounted Inspectors More and Chavez left here Monday on an in spection tour down the river. They returned last evening. Mrs. John Closner and son, Master Victor, left this morning for Brownsville, on a visit to rel atives and friends. Win. Schunior, county and dis district clerk, and A. E. Chavez, inspector of customs, left today by train for Brownsville.
