for the study of the curious creat
ures brought to the surface by the

There are tauks of alcohol, cases
full of jais and bottles for speci
mens, chemical conveniences, mic
roscopes, and even a photographic
dark room in which pictures of in
teresting animals may be develop
ed. Some of ;hr creatures are much
altered in appearance by beiu
preserved in spirits or otherwise,
and it may be desirable o secure
their portraits vlnle they are
fresh. Unfortunately, the deip
sea fishes ark nearly always
more or less out of shape when
iuvertebrate specimens are placfd
in a cold room while absorbiug the
alcohol.
The fishes are injected with al
cohol by mtans of hypodermic
syringe, and so likewise are large
ahriraps and crabs. Deepsca tar
fiahes, aea-urcbin8, and small cor
als are first soaked in alcohol and
then dried ; large corals are spray
ed with alcohol and packed in salt;
jelly-fishes are hardened in solu
tion of picric acid, wrapped in
cheesecloth, and kept in strong al
