The U. S. hydrographic office at
New Orleans reports a depth of
only 25 fathoms of water in the
Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of
the Mississippi, where former
surveys showed 60 fathoms. Recent
volcauic upheavals are supposed
by some to have caused it.
New York quick lunch proprie
tors have decided to raise the' price
of beef and beans .and also . bain
and beans from 10 cents to 15
cents.

In order to obviate the frequent
disputes as to the ages of children,
the steamboat authorities in Swit
zerland have decided that in every
case where doubt arises the child
must be measured. All children
under two feet are to have free
passage and those between two feet
and four feet ars to pay half fare.
