ENGLAND WANTS GOLD
In
the Possession of Oom Paul
Kruger and Dr. Levels
Berlin. November 30 The Brit
ish government is telegraphing to
all German ports making inquiries
concerning Boer gold bars worth
$650,000, which, it is supposed, have
been brought to this country from
South Africa within the past fort
night The bars are destined for
f jrmer President Kruger and Dr.
Leyds, and it is presumed, had been
concealed in the Northern Transvaal,-Great
Britain will endeavor
to legally attach the gold if it can
be located, on the ground that she
is" entitled to all the assets of the
Transvaal because she has assumed
responsibility for the debts of that
country including the bonds prior
to the war.

General Botha's reply to Colonial ILl
Secretary Chamberlain that the late
Boer government had no assets was
strictly true, as far as he knew, but
since receiving Mr. Chamberlain's
letter General Botha learned, ac
cording to seemingly trustworthy
information, that Mr. Kruger and
Dr. Leyds have in their possession
$2,500,000. General Botha request
ed them to turn over this gold for
the benefit of the Boer people, but
Dr. Leyds refused, averring that the
money was to be used in upholding
the Boer natic-nr'ity in the future.
General Botha has notified Dr.
Leyds that unless the gold is given
up legal proceedings will be brought
against him.

ONE-LEGGED WAN'S CHARITY.
And, talking about charity, what
do you think of this? Through the
rain and ooze of Park Row last
night there trudged a one-legged
man who had a package under his
arm. He picked his way through
the human maze with difficult', for
his crutch was none too safe on the
slipper' pavement. When he got
to the Brooklyn bridge entrance he
had to almost fight his way against
the tide so that he could reach his
objective point, which was the stand
of another one-legged person this
one a newsboy. The man's right leg
was missing; the boy's left leg was
gone. When the crippled man reach
ed the side of the crippled boy he
asked: "What size shoe do you
wear?" "Oh, any old size," replied
the boy. The man unwrapped his
package and brought to view one
triple soled; fleece lined, high laced
winter shoe. It was a "right."
"Put it on," said the one-legged
man to the one-legged boy. "I've
got'the other," and he showed the
shoe on his one foot.
The boy sat on the wet steps of
the "L," put on the fine shoe, hop
ped up with glee, danced around
on his crutch, annouced with joy
that there would be iiq more cold
"feet" for him this winter, and
then, suddenly remembering his
benefactor, he turned to thank him.
But the one-legged man was gone.
