A peculiar alteration made !j
the Czarina his been much talked
about and criticized in St. Peters
burg. She ha? had the study of
Alexander IT., which up to now
has been preserved untouched, turn
ed into a bathroom. In this room
Alexander II signed the manifesto
which abolished serfdom in Russia,
and thus gave iilerty to 23,000,000
of his subjects. ''However long I
may live I shall never be able to
do a better .deed," Alexander said
when he had signed it. He express
ed t lie wish that the room should
remain just as it was. For fort
years nobody touched this sacred
spiit. But now, by order of the
czarina ali the documents and his
torical relies have been put into a
lutuher room. The Imperial Library
in i. IVttersbnrg lias taken steps
to have at least the historical docu
ments saved.

Andrew Carnegie's return makes
timely th story of a reporter who
was assigned to see Mr. Carnegie on
an important public question.
Repeatedly refused admittance to
the house, he finally sought out a
Senator, who was a personal friend
of Mr. Carnegie's, to help him out.
In the course of conversation the
Senator handed him his card. Im
mediately the reporter was struck
with a bright idea, and wishing
his genial acquaintance good bye,
repaired once more to the Carnegie
mansion, and presented both his
own card and that of the Senator's.
The great doors swung open, and a
gracious reception was accorded to
the newspaper man by the master
of the house.
"Young man," said Mr. Carnegie,
"do Tou know that sixteen reporters
have called to see me today about
this -very question, and that I have
refused them all?"
"I surety ought to know that,
Mr. Carnegie, for I was the whole
sixteen," responded the scribe.
Mr. Carnegie was so pleased with
the young man's persistence that he
violated the rule and gave his views
at length on the subject regarding
wiiich Uc had previously refused to
tajk with anybod'.

HIT HIM AGAIN.
Brown wood Barnicr-Bullolin.
A small church was sadly in need
of repairs, and a meeting was -held
in it with a view to raising funds
for the purpose. The minister hav
ing said $500 would be needed, a 'very
wealthy and stingy member arose
and said he would give a dollar.
Just as ho sat down a- lump of
plaster fell from the celling and hit
him on the head, whereupon he rose
up hastily and said that he had
made a mistake, that he would give
$-0. This was too much for an en
thusiastic member present, who,
forgetful of everything, called out
fervently. "Oh, Lord, hit him again!
Hit him acain!"

The elevator man in a Chicago
" department store has been driven
insane by the questions asked by
shopiers, and the court has sent
him to an asylum. When the poor
man was brought up for examina
tion he shouted the names of the
departments that could be found
on the 'next'' floor, and informed
the Judge "I do not know, madam;
ask the clerks in the toy depart
ment.' That only one elevator man
should have become a maniac thus
far in the season seems remarkable.
Christinas shopping affords ample
justification for thousands of maniacs.
