There is considerable dissatis faction in Japan over the terms of peace. It is said a revolution is threatened. We had a better opin ion than that of the Japanese. Rtjwka tried to play the hog by claiming the peace term allowed her the privilege to fortify her half of the island of Sakhalin, and dcuiad the Japanese the same priv- lege. - SOME of our poets should give us a few verses on the "Song of the Mud Dauber." The bids range from $4 to $5 per acre, one reaching $11. This is as it should be. Just be cause the state own land is no reason it should be given away. an interview ou the subject of his present Gubernatorial cam paign, Mr. Colquitt says: "If I am elected I shall protect every ihonest dollar invested in Texas. I shall also protect the property right of every citizen in Texas. Broadly' this means, the protec tion of the citizens. It is still too early, in my opinion, to go into details and I believe nearly all arc familiar with mv policy. I am not responsible for an active cam paign at s.0 early n date. I still believe it is too early to go into any deop discussion. I would not have itarted so soon." "Beyond this," says the Express reporter Who wrote the interview, "Mr. Colquitt would not go." And that is going a long way, now. isn't it? Protect the property in terests of Texas! How heroic, how virtuous, how original! We stand affhast at such a soul stirring platform. We will rally upon it, we will; all Texas will and if Mr. Colquitt doesn't run like a scared wolf we arc much mistaken. Campbell. Brooks, Wells, Bell, look to your laurels! CHAKLCS CO. cTC READY FOR BATTLE. ,Japi Do Not Enjoy Idea of Peace Under the Terms Lidiapudze, Manchuria, Septem ber 5. Japanese are continuing preparations for a battle. This has caused astonishment, coming at the moment when the peace treaty is on the eve of being signed at Portsmouth. The Russian advance posts report that Japanese troops arc very much dissatisfied with the peace agreement. The terms of pdice arc the sub ject of discussion everywhere. In the Russian army the prevailing spirit is one of satisfaction and even of lively rejoicing, though general confidence is expressed that the Russian troops would be victorious if they had to fight another battle. The feeliug of ninny of the officers may be sum med up iii' the words of an eminent commander: ' "As a soldier I am greatly cha grined, but as a citizen I rejoice at the conclusion of peace." Three thousand Japanese who on August 27 descended on Port Dekastries set fire to a grass cov ered steppe and the conflagration took on serious proportions. Letter to Willie William. Reflections of a Bachelor. A dangerous thing about an heiress losing all her money is that all her good looks go with it. A nice thing about having a bald head is you don't have to worry about when your hair turns gray. One of the queerest thing about loving a girl is the way she be lieves vou when she says she doesn't. When a woman tells you that they don't sit on the floor to put on their stockings, what makes them think you think so? There is never any need to lie to your wife if you can only get her into a frame of mind where she will not believe anything you say. New York Press. A Lost Chance. A man recently died as the re sult of worrying over his inability to alleviate an imaginary itclftng of his leg that had been amputated a short time before. It is remark able that newspaper paragraphers have not found iome joke to stand ou that amputated leg. Southern Farm Magazine. The inhabitants of Southern Chile arc said to foretell the weath er by means of a strange barometer. It consists of a cast off shell of a crab. The dead shell is white in fair, dry weather, but indicating the approach of a moist atmosphere by the appearance of small red dots, as the moisture in the air in creases it becomes entirely red, and remains so. throughout the rainy season. Ex. A-man may be able to prove to his own satisfaction that he isn't a fool, but he can seldom prove it to the satisfaction of his neighbors. Chicago Ncy Subscribe to The Herald. How to Do Things. This should be a study of the capable ut -co-date farmer. I re member reading in an old magazine a stor , as I remember it, in which a boy educated in our common schools was, by some power of magical art, transported back to the ages before any new inventions or discoveries in science were made to mitigate toil. He was thrown among a primitive or semisavage people. He first went with a party to hunt the elk. The elk was sur rounded and killed with a stone headed club. The boy wished for his rifle and was asked what a rifle is. He explained its uses and said it was made of iron or steel and loaded with powder and lead. But what are iron and steel and lead?" asked the chief. Can you show us how to make these things?" But the young boy could give no rational explanation of the processes of making iron or steel or lead. He ventured to say that the gunpowder used was made, he thought, of charcoal and salpeter, omitting mention of sulphur; but while the chief knew what charcoal was, he had no conception of salpeter and the boy could not enlighten him. The boy described a railroad and a steam engine, but when asked by the chief to make one he confessed his inability to do so.. It was the same thing when asked to make a clock to tell the time of day. He could do nothing. When asked what made the tides, a subject in which the chief took a great interest, he could not explain the influence of the moon upon the waters of the ocean. After numerous other questions, the boy proposed that instead of using torches the chief should use candles. Fortunately for the rep utation of the boy, he knew how to make a dip candle, which he proceeded to do, and for this the chief was very thankful. The whole practical knowledge of the useful arts of this boy was confin ed to that of making a tallow dip. Southern Farm Magazine.
