THE DAILY HERALD Jesse O. Wheeler. Proprietor. Consolidated in 1893 with the Daily- Cos- monolitan which was published in Brownsville, for sixteen years. OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY JOURNAL nNro4 fit the l'Mtoftrtc. IlKwiMritt. a hoendciiHW tjpttor. Texas, TOTBSDAY. SltPTUMBER 26. 1505 THE ELDER STATESMEN. The statement of Judge George Clark of Waco that he would serve in the next legislature if the pco pie of his county should elect him ought to be riveted upon tne alien tion of the people of Texas. What ever else may be said of it, it can not be doubted that his willingness springs from the purest strain of pu triotism the sort of patriotism now most in demand in Texas When the Post suggested that it wa a time for the greatest and wisest of our statesmen to be called out. it was speaking to the point and the prcs of Waco readily re sponded. We have no doubt that Waller Baker would be willing to serve as Judge Clark's colleague, and wouldn't that be a team? Uvery legislative district in the State contains ineu of character and vt-:u3nm. Mud the Post hones that the newspaper will aid the move ment to call them to the front. Un questionably men of this character would not care to serve in a lejsis lni!vefinficit' but thev can be drafted. It is with the people to de cide. If they want the elder states men, all yhey have to do is to sy so. It would be the most remarkable political occurrence of the time to have n State legislature of this kind. It would excel in the quality of its pecsonncl the house of representa tives at Washington, and would equal in dignity, wisdom and char acter the United States Senate. For once, let the legislature seek tlhe men. Draft the elder statesmen and we will have at the conclusion of their labors a set of laws that nvould challenge the admiration of mankind. All the blunders of the past would be obliterated. Our sys tems of administration would be in harmony with the progress of the times. Our taxing system would be equalized and just to all concerned. 3vcry act would be the result of ripe judgment, profound wisdom and unadulterated patriotism. To the State it would mean more than can be measured by dollars. And the people may rest assured that the plan is practicable. The elder statesmen will not decline the call. Think of a legislature having in its mambership Roger Q. Mills, Governor Hogg, Georfe Clark, M. M. Crane, N. W. Philey, Dick Wynne, John Church, Horace Cate, J. S, Griwaau. Horace Chilton, Henry D. McDonald, Howard Teui plelon, Cone Johason, JoUm Duu cau, B. D. Tadetoo, George T. Jester, Torn Hciulersou, A. V. Tcrrall, Emory Smith. Walter Grcshain, M. P. Mott, Rudolph Kleberg, T. J. Beail. H. O. Head. Bob Milner, Charles Jcnkias, Rob ert Kleber. George NeaJ, W. P. Ramsey, K. IC. Leett. Walter ( Tips, anfl doeetts of others men who would jrrace any legislative or deliberative body on earth. And yet Texas can have just such a legislature--one, that would fix things and would ptu the old State on the pathwav to inimitable jrlory. And as we have said, none of these men are too Jfleat or too wise to serve Texas in the legislature at this time. A perusal of the above level ttuth from the Houston Post OR. To This Hicrald there seems an easy remedy for this. Reduce the number of legislators to, say, fifty, select such men as those men tioned by the Post, and there will be less, but more effective legisla tion. Of course with the reduction in number could come a corres ponding increase of pay, and the true statesman while bcincr thus enabled to -serve his state, would at the some time act with more facility in attending to the state's business, in order to the more quickly return to his own private affairs, vhich would ot necessity suncr more or less from the non-attention. The trouble is the men who are willing to sacrifice themselves upon the altar of their state, in the capacity of law makers, are usually those whose ambition is their only stock in trade and for exceeds their abili ty. Of course there are exceptions, but thcije only prove the rule, but a majority of them have not the know how," and like the smart young man who essayed to upbraid an aged but learned physician who had taken a drop to much and had fallen by the roadside- they will never get over what is the matter with them. As the Post says let the place seek the man, and turn a deaf ear to the place hunter. If the Hon. George Clark, of Waco, is willing to sacrifice to a certain ex tent, his own personal interests, and harkeu to the voice of duty, by accepting the call of his fellow men, others can be found who will do likewise. When this is done, there will be fewer and better laws, and the confidence of the world will be our own. He Got the Place; It is not generally known that meerschaum is mined like coal, but iu Asia minor its mining is an important industry, says the Philadelphia Bulletin. Now, don't eve ask anyone it meerscnaum grows on a tree. Del Rio Mirror. Many people have the impression that ttieerachauuT u-petrified sea froth, from the fact it is often fouud along the sea shore iu peculiarly rounded snow white limps. This may hove originated from the German word meers chaum" which meant, senfroth, and was ignorauly supposed to be the orfjgiia of the material of which , meersdMi&uu pipes, etc are manu factured . Sccretarv Bonaparte, speaking before a meeting of the A. O. II. at Baltimore recently, told the fol lowing story: "Ayoung minister who was to preach on trial before a congrega tion of multi-millionaires at a very fashionable watering place, ran over his most carefully prepared sermons with a judicious friend to select one suitable. He thought himself a discourse on 'ThoaEvil of Divorce' might do, but his adviser shook his head every third wo man in the congregation had been divorced at least once that sort of talk wouldn't fill the bill at all. "He offered in its place one on 'The Evils of Gambling, but this was pronounced even worse; all his expected hearers of both sexes played 'bridge' during most of their spare time, and three-fourths of the men put out big money at poker besides. "He had a third on 'The Evil of Drink,' but the wise counsellor turned it down likewise. Too many of the parish every night walked into the casino, and were carried out of it; the topic would seem 'personal.' "At last he fished out an old thesis of his college dnys on The Sin of the Scribes and Pharisees.' 'That's it, exactly,' cried his de lighted friends. 'Pitch into the Scribes and Pharisees for all you're worth; hit 'em hard, the harder the better, for they ain't got no friends nowadays.' So the young man gave the Scribes and Pharisees hail Columbia, hurt nobody's feel ing, pleased everybody and 'got his place." There is nothing makes a woman more indignant than to think the street car conductor has forgotten her and then have him come and demand her nickel. A few months of youthful study and application will greatly lessen the burden and toil in after years.
