The sleepers are beginning to sit up arid notice things, though the sound of the hammer may yet be heard as of yore. Somr of these days Brownsville is going to wake up with wet feet and eyes blinded by the light and find herself a city of 20,000. Lights and Water. The mass meeting at the court house this morning, called for the purpose of-discussing the question of securing lights and waterworks for Brownsville, and of devising ways and means to that end, at 10 o'clock organized with William Kelly as chairman pro-tempore and John Bannon as secretary. Lapt. Kelly explained the object of the j meeting and made very clear and forcible the urgent, im perative, necessity of water and liehts for the town, .to aid it in its future development and growth. Owen Ford, a capitalist of St. Louis and an expert in the matter J of lights and waterworks, then ad dressed the meeting and laid before them his proposition. He said if the city of Brownsville would raise $25,000 of the $60,000 necessary to install water and (lights, he would put id $75,000, leaving $40,000 as a cash reserve for initial expenses and as a guaranty sinking fund. He asks the citizens to' raise $10,- 000 at once, that amount of cash being necessary to secure a charter, and to guarantee $lo,000 more when it may be needed and he will at once organize the company, have the bonds issued, bearing 6 per cent interest and payable in twenty years. He proposes to take the franchise ately signed by the City Counci and says that of the people of Brownsville will make up their Dart of the amount, he stands ady to furnish his part and wil go to work at once, or as soon as a charter can be secured. There had already been subscribed some $20,500 of the amount needed by the citizens and this morning the following persons present volun teered the following additional amounts, most of them having already subscribed: John Bartlett... $100 L. Brulay 125 J. Bollack 100 J. K. Combe 1Q0 A. Cueto 100 W. F. Dennett 100 E- C. Foito 200 B. G. Stegman 25 John Vails 50 In this great land of ours, every American's wife is his queen, his sisters are his princesses and his friends are his faithful, loviag subjects. His realm is meaitred by the distance he has gone into other destinies. Shadowed Home. Never dawns a bright "anniver sary that has not its shadowed side. Never is there a home to which sooner or later grief does not come. At the Thanksgiving board this year, as in other years, there will be vacant chairs, and the household of the sorrowing continually is re cruited by those to whom has come the pang of io3s. It is not easy to understand why trials so often come to those who seem to need no harsh discipline, and from our limited experience we cannot tell why it is that one is taken and another left. One thing we may do, and that is trust. We may safely trust a love that is greater than ours and' may safely leave our vanished dear ones in the care of Him who gave them to us. If our hearts were but more simple, We should take Him at His Word, And our lives would bejall sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord. With, tie exception of the stage villain- every man has his good points. Total $900 This reduces the amount yet to be raised to $38,000 audjit is almost certain that it will be subscribed without any difficulty. The fol lowing were appointed to solicit the subscription of the amount yet needed and will go to work at once F. Yturria, W. M. Ratcliffe, Jas B. Wells, Wm. Kelly, S. L. Dwor- mau, J. G. Fernandez. John Bannon was also appointed to see the subscribers and collect from them the $10,000 necessary to secure the charter, being author ized to issue receipts for same, re citing the receipt of each amount as behifr of the subscription to the electric light and waterworks fund of Brownsville, and reciting the fact that upon the issuance of the stock of the company, said receipts would be received as navnient for shares to the amount of the face value of the receipt. The meeting there adjourned sine die and will be reconvened by call. Good Times. The recent blizzard sent the price of cotton skyward and it also pushed up the price of rice nearly 25 cents per sack. The farmers who had their crops ready for the market profited from the raise, but the frost nipped many a bale of cotton, and there is danger that cold winds blasted hundreds of sacks of rice. Despite this, however, this promises to be the most prosperous year in the history of both the rice adn cotton farmer if they can only secure the labor necessary to har vest the crops yet in the fields. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot' reach the diseased portion of xhe ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed con dition of the mucous lining of the Eus tachian Tube. When this tube is inflam ed you have a rumbling sound or imper fect hearing, and when it is entirely clos ed, Deafness is the resnlt, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an" inflamed condi tion of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Onre. Send for circulars Jree. F. J.CHENEY & Co., Toledo, O.
