Work was begun today on
residence for T. A. Kiender, Esq
which will be located on upper
Levee street adjoining the resid
ence of Mrs. Dougherty. It will
be a pretty and up-to-date cottage

A recention and dance will l e
given at the opera house Friday
evening by a number ot young
ladies, who will invite the gentle
men to be their guests for the even
ing. Nearly all of the ladies in
town are assisting the young ladies
who have the project in charge, and
the event will doubtless be a socia
success. The ladies deserves credit
for attempting to vary the monoto
ny which has depressed social cir
cles here lately
The resignation of Rev. W. H
Petty as pastor of the Baptist
church of Brownsville which was
tendered recently is regretted very
much by the members of that
church, as well as by many other
persons in our city, who feel that
Mr. Pettv has done a irood work
here. He does not expect to leav
Brownsville, however, as he wi
still continue to do mission wor
in this section, being under the
duection of the Baptist Mission
board, his field including thecouu
trv between Point Isabel and Rio
Grande. Mr. Petty has made many
friends in Brownsville among all
denominations, winning the respect
and liking of all by his up-right
manly character, and it is welcome
news that he and his family will
still made their home here.

J. P. Herzog of Galveston left
this morning.
C. A- Earl of Hallectsville is a
guest at the Miller.
Will A. Perkins, the drug
drummer or ban Antonio, is in
town.
Clam Agent S. J. Lancaster came
down from Kingsville yesterday on
official business.
S. E. Converse, a well known
hardware agent from Corpus
Christi, is a visitor here.
David Young, ofSanta Anita
ranch, returned home this 'morn
ing after yesterday spent in town.
Mrs. E. J. O'Brien of Kings
ville-, who has been spending the
past week here as the guest of Mr
and Mrs. P. H Vasey, left for
home today.
J. B. Armstrong left today for
San Antonio, with his children,
Misses Jennie and Sylvia and Mas
ter Frank, to spend several days
seeing the fair.
O. L. Moore and J. C. De-
Bruin, contractors on the canal
work at Lonsboro, spent yesterday
here on business and returned to
Lonsboro today.
Services will be held at the
Baptist church tonight and also
tomorrow night, at which the
sermon will be preached by 'Rev.
A. C. Earl of Hallettsville.
John Box and E. D. Box were
arrivals on the Point train yester
day afternoon. Messrs Box have
just sold a lot of sheep to a buyer
roni Uvalde, and came up to see
about their'delivery.
J. P. Withers arrived here last
night on his return from his north
ern trio, and left today for his
lead-quarters at Llano Grande.
Mr. Wither is expecting Mrs.
Withers to join him at Llano
Grande in the, near future, to
soend the winter, emoving our
unexcelled climate.
Manuel M. de Chavero, a busi
ness man ot tne city ot juexico,
accompanied by his wife and two
daughters, arrived in town last
nifrht on his way home from a
visit to New York, Washington
and other northern cities. Mr
Chavero is a brother-in-law of
Mrs. Annie Putegnat, Inspectress
of customs, and will remain here
for a few days visiting her.
Joe Champion of Roswell, New
Mexico, is here on a visit to his
bovliood home after an" absence of
twenty-six years, being the guest
of his brother Frank Champion

The Elections.
Owing to the new law having
cut downline number of judges and
clerks of elections, the work of
counting the ballots cast in today'
election could not be begun until
after the closing of the polls which
will be at seven this evening
Therefore no report of the results
could be obtained for today's Her
.VLVD.
The voting has been light through
out the dav, however, and it is
probable that not over three hun
dred votes have been cast in
Brownsville. Of these it is perhap:
safe to say that about two hundred
and fifty were for the deniocratu
ticket.
To Receive Election Returns
A number of citizens have sub
scribed for the purpose of securing
telegraphic reports of today's elec
tions in the various states. The
returns will be posted at the Texas
Confectionery as received tonight.
