Consul General Richard Guenth er, in a report on the mosquito and the alleged preference of that sanguinary insect for colors and persons, says that it is stated that the mosquitoes are strongly influ enced in choosing their victims by the color of their clothes. In 1841 of white, threads kept mosquitoes away mucLmorje effectively than one with black tfifea'dsv Joly observed in Madagascar that mosquitoes prefer to alight on black doil rather than on white, sandy soil, and rather on black shoes and clothes than on white. The natives of Madagascar even suspend pieces of black fabric from the ceilings of their huts in order to attract the mosquitoes tQ it. Joly also found that light dogs were torment ed lessbv mosquitoes than black ones, negfee3"aore than Euro peans. Similar oiJrg-ns-'were made in India. The Englishmen, Nuttal and Shipley, found that Anopheles maculipennis preferred colors in this order: Dark blue, dark red, brown red, black, gray, olive gray, violet, green, light gray, pearl gray, pale gray, azure blue, ochre color, white, yellow. The malaria expert. Galli-Valerio, director of the institute for ex perimental hygiene and parasito logy at the University of Lau sanne, Switzerland, conSrms these facts in his "Manuel pour Ja lutte contre les moustiques," just pub lished, as a result of his own experiments. He states that in ex periments with the Anopheles ma culipennis and Anopheles bifur catus 119 settled down on dark colors and only 33 upon light ones. Similar ' results were ob tained with culex pipiens and culex vexans; 349 preferred' dark and only 120 lighter colors. Thus the chances of the number of mosquitoes' bites may be de creased by choosing light colors for our clo-bes, but they cannot be avoided entirely. It is the same with all the remedies used in the open air. Tobacco smoke is the most efficient, but not at all infallible. Camphorated vaseline and other .strongly smelling oint ments rubbed on the lianas are only efficacious until the odor has evaporated, which is done quickly on a hot day. The only certain protection is a veil of muslin gauze such as is -worn by the Italian rail road watchmen and soldiers in the malarial zones. The most rational way is to wage war against the larvae and eggs of mosquitoes which they deposit in swamps and stagnant waters. This is best done by means of a thin coating with petroleum. This should be the work of the municipalities or the State. Southern Farm Magazine Officer Had -Nerve. The Russian field marshal, Paskievitch, records the following incident: On one occasion he had ordered a well-sustained shell fire to be opened on a certain point which obstructed him in his opera tions, and impatiently awaited the result. Seeing that his orders were not obeyed, Paskievitch set spurs to his horse, and galloped toward the eminence on which the unlucky battery was stationed. "Who is the fool in command here?" he asked. "I am," answered the officer, stepping up to the general. "Well, captain, how is it your shells have not got to work yet?" "Because-they are bad and won't explode, general." "All bosh, I tell you, sir; you "don't catch me with such sillv stuff. This very evening you shall be tried by court martial." The captain then took a shell out of the heap, lighted tbe fuse, and, holdiugthe smoking projectile in. his hand, he saluted his superior officer, saying: "See for yourself!" Paskievitch, without wincing, stood with folded arms awaiting to see whether the shell would burst or the fuse go out. When the match had gone out, the captain threw the shell on the ground, and the general muttering to himself, ' 'He is right," rushed off to tbe scene of action to take some other meas ures. The same evening, however, he sent the captain the cro.cs of St. Vladimir. London Telegraph. A. woman seldom listens to a man's harangue if he refuses to offer one.
