Deer, wild turkeys and quail abound in the woods and prairies all along the river. W. A. McNeill of Santa Maria says that the other day seven deer were seen in his field in broad daylight. Ducks and snipe are also very plentiful wherever there is water. Local sportsmen are having the time of their-lives this winter. Among a number of others of similar nature, we received in this morning's.mail a letter from a real estate man in far away South Dakota asking us to send him a copy of The Herald, to which we cheerufly acceded. He is "desirous of getting in touch with a good, responsible laud firm here and says that he wants to learn about the country, hotels etc., as it is his purpose to come here about Jan. 15, with 40 persons who desire to buy land. He closes his letter with the requests that we furnish him the name of some reputable real estate firm and ask such firm to write to him. PERSONALS. B. H. Erazier, a nabob of Ray- mondville, is here today. Ralph Tucker came down last night from Santa Maria. C. J. Crane, private secretary of eff N. Miller, is in town today. T. L. -Jones, a prominent ranchman of Harlingen is in town today on business. Geo. Mc.Gonigle who represents the Western Grocer Co. of San Antonio, is in town today. Miss Ruthven who is teaching at Olmito, after spending Sunday visiting friends in town, left for her work this morning. Dr. C. H. Thorn returned last night from Waco where he has been for several days attending the meeting of the grand Masonic odge. Albert Sammons returned to Mercedes this morning, where he is now making his home, alter spending a couple of days in town on business. Andres Uhampion a prosperous farmer and ranchman of Progreso, Hidalgo county, was an arrival in town last night and is spending the day here. Marcellus Dougherty went to Hidalgo today, having in charge a man wanted by the officials there for some offense against the law made and provided. After spending Sunday here with his family, Contractor Mar tin Hanson, returned this morning to his work at Raymondville, carrying with him several laborers Mrs. Chester B. Davis, wife of the chief engineer of the Yoakum syndicate at Diaz, (Mercedes) ac companied by Miss Day, daughter of the hotel keeperat Mercedes, left for home Sunday morning after spending Saturday here. Dr. E. E. Winn, an old settler and resident of, Sherman, arrived in town last night and will make his home here on account ol our climate. The doctor will buy land here" and bring down his family shortly. Welcome to the best country on earth sir. Dr. White and Mr. and Mrs Stedman of Waco were arrivals in town Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Stedman are newly married and come here, on their honeymoon trip. While here they are visiting Miss Idora Kinney, a teacher in the public schools here. Mrs. Wreford, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. M. Besttiro. and her son, J. C. Wreford, ar rived home home last night after a trip through Mexico, the greater part of which time she spent visit ing her son, who has the manage ment of a large skating rink in the City of Mexico.
