ACT IN GOOD FAITH!
It is said that one or two in
fluential citizens who signed the
petition to the city council re
questing that the election for a
bond issue for the purpose of build
ing water-wcrks and a electric
light system are now opposing the
-Jiond issue. This would scarcely
appear reasonable or consistent on
the part of the said citizens and
The Heraxd doubts whether they
are quoted correctly. They surely
would not be so foolish as to attach
their names to such a petition and
then work against the very thing
they asked for, especially after
putting the city to the expense of
iolding the election. The fact is,
that there were several who signed
the petition who actually prefer
private to city ownership of public
iatilities, but they realized that it
was of paramount importance that
the town should be provided with
water and light as quickly as pos
sible, and, seeing that we had
waited on private franchises in
vain for four years, they were
willing to sacrifice their personal
preferences for the sake of obtain
ing these utilities without further
delay. That these men will stand
hy their petition to the council is
Iiardly to be doubted. U
It surely would not look like
acting in good faith for any of the
signers of the petition to be going
about now talking against munici
pal ownership, since they them
selves have asked, for it, and it is
Co be hoped that none of them will
stultify themselves by so doing.
"HOW ABOUT 7mS?"
"It is with apologies that The
"Herald devotes so much of its
space today to the publication of
the report of the outrageous lies of
the negro lawyers who came here
some weeks ago ostensibly to in
vestigate the raid upon Browns
ville, which was committed by ne
gro . soldiers of the 25th Infantry
last August, whose statement is
published in full in this evening's
Herald, as it appeared in the
"2Tew York Times and Cincinnati
"Enquirer of July 27. This clipping
l A . TTK. 1 TTT
was sent w tui uukaiu oy vv.
3?. Paine of Madison, Ind., with a
"fetter saying: "How about this?
I don't believe a word of this, but
Jots of people will.'' It is the fact
that people of standing, such as
Hr..Paineasksuch a question, and
papers of such standing as the
Times and Enquirer, and also the
Chicago Tribune, which published
almost the same tale on the same
date, and which was doubtless
published by scores of other reput
able papers, have seen fit to give
spnee - such a vicious attack upon
Browu ville, that The Herald
feels that it should pay some at-
really seems absurd that reputable
papers could be induced to publish
such sensational rot, or that
reasonable people could even waste
time reading it, much less giving
it credence, yet such a thing has
occurred, and Brownsville is again
put on the defensive in the. case.
la view ' of the wide circulation
that has been given to these slan
ders" against' the town, it would
seem incumbent upon our citizens
to take some active steps to set
themselves right before the coun
try. Denials seem to have no
effect, as these have been published
reneatedlv. and even the odsitive
r , - ,
evidence oi the citizens of Browns
ville rendered before the senate
committee seems to be insufficient
to prove to the northern press that
our people havebeen first outraged
by the very men who were sworn
to protect American citizens and
then insulted by being accused of
the heinous crime of which they
weie the victims. It would seem
that the only step left to our peo
ple is to urge the senate com
mittee not to complete their report
upon the case without first coming
to Brownsville in person and mak
ing further investigations. They
could not come here without being
convinced of the guilt of the sol
diers and the innocence of the citi
zens. The Herai,d knows that
our people are unanimous in wish
ing that the committee should come
here. Indeed an invitation was
sent the committee by the mass
meeting held here some months
ago, asking that the committee do
so. So far. howewer, no answer
to that invitation has been re
ceived, and The Herald believes
that it should be repeated in more
emphatic terms, urging that the
committee come here, in behalf of
justice, and investigate the case.
An "R. S. V. P." postscript might
be of some effect, in securing some
intimation as to whether or not the
committee will come. Under such
a shrewd and powerful leader as
Senator JForaker, it is not impos
sible that the enemies of Browns
ville may yet succeed in convinc
ing the people of the North and
even the senate commmittee itself
that what these defamers says of the
town is true.
An official denial of the charges
made by the negro lawyers is be
ing prepared and will be published
as soon as completed.

WHY SO WEAK?
Kidney Troubles May be Sapping
Your Life Away. Brownsville People
Have Learned This Fact- -
When a healthy man or woman
begins to run down without ap
parent cause, becomes weak, lan
guid, depressed, suffers backache,
headache, dizzy spells and urinary
disorders, look to the kidneys for
the cause of it all. Keep the kid
neys well and they will keep you
well. Doan's Kidney Pills cure
sick kidneys and keep them well.
J. P. Anderson, carpenter, liv
ing in the southern part of
Corpus Christi, Texas, says:
"My Kidneys have given me more
or less trouble for the past two
years. A sharp twinge of pain at
times, darting through my back,
loins and the secretions were too
frequent and caused much annoy
ance, especially in the winter. My
son saw Doan's Kidney Pills ad
vertised and brought home a box.
I used them and obtained great
benefit. The action of the kidneys
was corrected and my back has
given me no trouble since. I can
recommend Doan's' Kidney Piils
with pleasure."
