The people of Houston made no mistake in" acquiring the water works. By economical manage ment and intelligent operatibn the plant has been greatly improved and the service extended. The .pumping capacity has been doubled and the danger of a water famine permanently removed, since if one plant should break down another is available, for service. The ex tensions now being made will furnish hundreds of families with water who are now without service. Thus within ten months thec sys-; tern has paid all its. operating ex penses, the interest on the bonded debt and a surplus of $80,000 for improvements and extensions. Now that the plant has been en larged and improved and ground for a large reservoir obtained, the next step will be to increase the storage capacity of the system and extend the mains. Within .five years at most the service will out of current revenues pay for its own development and give the city a permanent abundance of cheap and date. 4 The election officers .in the first andsecond wards have decided to donate the salary due them by the city, jusc totshow the interest they take in the waterworks proposition. One thousand barrels, sugar, .flour or beer barrels, must be in good condition, will pay 25 cents (XI. S.x currency) for each barrel delivered at Cobolino's Fish when so many improvements and extensions were imperative. Nat urally the service must pay its own way, the interest on outstand ing bonds and for all extensions and improvements, besides fur nishing the city itself water for fire and other purposes. It has been demonstrated that the system will do all this and more. After the mains have been extended to all parts of the city it will be feasible to reduce the rates, for the extensions will greatly increase the number of patrons and re venues, and in good time even the bonded water debt itself will be canceled.
