The Brownsville Herald. OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY JOURNAL jSSe O. Wheeler, Proprietor. Consolidated in 1893 with the Daflr Cos mopolitan which W2S published in Brownsville, for sixteen years. Entered at the Postoffice. Brownsville. Texas as second-class matter. TUESDAY. SEPTEBIBER 10. 1907 DEVELOPING OUR RE SOURCES. "The Herald yesterday printed a news item telling of the prepara tions being made for a fruit planta tion at San Benito, where 300 acres will be planted in bananas, grapes and oranges. Mr. Stilwell has been experimenting at his nurser ies, and he found that he could grow here grapes that California could not excel as regards flavor, size and shipping qualities. He discovered that vines in Browns ville bear fruit 18 months from planting, and that the grape crop is from six weeks to two months -earlier than in California. Orange trees do well in this country, where protected, and by planting them between the rows of bananas Mr Stilwell is confident he will make them a success commercially. The same method will be adopted in setting out the grapevines, thus making the whole plantation a combination vineyard, orange 5jrove and banana plantation. THE DATE CROP: "The way date trees are being in traduced along the Rio Grande valley, it may not be many years before dates will be one of the -principal crops shipped out from this border section of the State. Iaredo Times. There is no doubt about the date tree being a success in the Lower Rio Grande, where it grows to per fection and even as far back in the country as Falfurrias it is evident ly a success commercially. It is a fact about dates being a great crop in this valley. The trees pollinat ed have yielded abundantly dates of a fine quality. KEEP BUILDING. Victoria has more blocks of pav ed sidewalks than any city of her -size in Texas. Victoria Advocate. "But don't rest on that. Build -more and then some more. San Antonio Express. The authorities in Victoria have administered the sidewalks ordin ance with out fear or favor. The 'millionaire was hauled into court Just as quickly as the-- owner of a little cottage home. The example set by Victoria can be followed by any city in the state that has offi cers who will enforce the sidewalk ordinance. CIVIC PRIDE. "'Little drops of water and little grains of sand make the mighty ocean and Jthe beauteous land. ""Well; how about little drops of efforts and little grains of sense "building up big cities? Laredo Times. It will be a poor city built by little drops of effort and little grains of sense, unless the right spirit is behind the atoms. If the contribu tions are given in the same spirit sis the "widow's mite," no power aa earth can prevent the construc tion of a great city. The Mosquito Responsible. Dr. V. P. Armstrong, State Quarantine Officer at Brownsville, says the health of that .city was never so good as it has been since the anti-mosquito crusade was un dertaken and prosecuted with such xngor. Brownsville had an epidemic of dengue fever earlier in the summer and the State Health Officer vis ited that .city to institute an in vestigation. He found the city infested with mosquitoes and ho told. the people that the mosquitoes were largely, is not entirely, res ponsible for the spread of the fever. Then began the anti-mosquito campaign, and Dr. Armstrong says that as soon as active warfare upon the mosquitoes began, the cases of dengue fever began to grow rapid ly less each day, so that within ten slays the number of cases was re cTaced from about seventy-five a day to two or three cases a day, and soon there was hardly a vestige of the fever left. Dr. Armstroug says the mosquito may not be the only cause of the propagation of this fever, but the experience at Brownsville confirms the suspicion that the mosquito is at least largely responsible as the distributor of dengue, as well as of other fevers There are few cities in Texas now that have not made some efforts to rid themselves of mos quitoes and that have not adopted ordinances requiring the screening of cisterns and water barrels and the draining or oiling of pools of water in which the mosquito might find a breeding place. If these or dinances were vigorously enforced from the early spring until the late autumn, the house mosquito, which is a nuisance as well as a menace to health, would soon be a rarity in any highly civilized com munity.
