Frank Pierce arrived here last night from Hidalgo. J. R. Martin, of San Antonio, is in the city on business. I. F. Bailey and daughter, of Rockport, are in the city. John W. Hoit returned from La Lomita ranch last night. L. H. Johnson, of, Galveston, registered at the Miller last night. E. P. Scott, of Paris, Texas, registered at the Miller Hotel Sun day. J. M. Mather, of Houston, Texas, is in the city on a business trip. J. H. Griffin came down to Brownsville last night from Mercedes. Dr. Bell was a passenger on the train this morning, going to Har- lingen. George A. Fearnow and wifei arrived in the city Saturday from Santa Maria. John Emberson in the city, hav ing arrived last night from Jones- boro, Arkansas. A. C. Doughty of Corpus Christi, deputy game warden is here with his son from Lyford. It. E. Kauffmau, a well known Houston business man, arrived in Brownsville last night. Mrs. E. J. Harkness, of Ray- mondville, came in last night and registered at the Miller. Allen Johnson and Miss Anna Johnson arrived in Brownsville Carry Stock of Corn, Oats, Potatoes, Unions, last night from corpus christi. Mrs. Jesse u. Wheeler was called to Victoria this morning by the death of a very dear friend. Contractor Goldammer and wife took their baby to Harlingen today to see Mrs. Goldammer's parents. Mrs. Vivier, Miss Ada Egly, Capt. Reed and Guy Rentfro came up from Point Isabel Saturday night. Frank Oliver and Dick Woods of Victoria were in the city yester day to attend the fiesta in Mata moros. A. W. Snyder, of Lewiston, Penn., is in the city to investigate the prospects of the Brownsville country. The public school children were given a half holiday this afternoon on account of the festivities in Matamoros. J. B. McAUen and O. Aleman, of Delfina, are in the city on a pleasure trip and are staying at the Rio Grande Hotel. F. S. Champion, the merchant prince of Santa Maria, John Simo and John Champion of Point Isa bel are in the city today. E. Kowalski, John Champion and family, Joe Vivier, John Simo and sister, and Joe Vivier came up from Point Isabel night. Miss Zoe Wells, Miss L. John son, A- A. Browne and daughter, Miss Keller, Miss Howell, Mrs. C. Laroache, arrived from the Point yesterday. L. H. Bates and J. W. Wheatley, special agents of the Treasury De partment are in the city on busi ness. Mr. Bates is an old resident of Brownsville and his friends are pleased to meet him. Col- W- J. Craig, general pas senger and freight agent of the Southern Pacific with headquarters at Victoria, accompanied by Mrs. Craig, arrived here Saturday night to attend the fiesta in Matamoros. F. E. Lawton, inspector in charge of the Brownsville Immi gration office, will leave here to morrow morning for San Antonio and other points on official busi ness. He will be away about a j week. ! Dr. Headley, accompanied by JLZ,rr arrived in the city last night from Rio Grande City. . This morning The doctor saw Miss Headley off on the early train for Galveston, where she is in her third year in the University of Texas Medical School. Miss M. Browne, Miss Miss L. Johnson, R. B. Rentfro, A. A. Browne and Pancho Alcedo went down to the Point Saturday. J. H. Hatherly, a cattleman of Bastrop county, is visiting friends and relatives in the Brownsville country. T." J. One of the old-time pibneers'of the frontier, Dr. Headley, of Rio Grande City, was in the city this morning. He is looking as bright and strong as "Young Locbinvar and greeting friends on every hand as though he felt like that character. The doctor is enthus iastic over the succces of his daughter, Miss Mary, who is a successful student in her third year at the State University Medical School. A great treat is promised to pat rons of the bull fights on the 29th of September, when Elvira and Maria Segovia the world renowned bull fighters and their troup of lady bull fighters will give an exhibition at the plaza in Matamoros. While horses will not be used, the exhi bition will be above the ordinary, as the troupe has an great reputa tion. Four bulls will te fought to death. There was a great rush at the hotels Saturday night. Dr. Tap pan, of the Marine Hospital Corps, could not get accommodation and was relieved by the arrival of In spector F. Lawton, who extended the hospilality of his home to the doctor. The Rio Grande is now filling out its bed in the widest stretches and promises to rise higher on ac count of rains in Mexico. The ensign flying at the Immi gration office this morning looked as though the officials were signal ling for relief, as it was upside down the distress signal. The national flag is displayed on all the public buildings today in honor of the anniversary of Mexico's independence. The ferry did a fine business Sunday, handling the passengers without a hitch and to the satis faction of everyone.
