He ought to be pilloried. Trrwsrt are busv times on the Lower Rio Grande, and it keep's a email nfternoon oaper on the jump to get the news of new enter prises, so many are continually be ing started. The development now in progress 'in the two counties of Cameron and Hidalgo is really phenomenal. The crttise of the big Atlantic fleet under "Fightin Bob" "Evans probably means nothing more than a practise cruise, but the fact that Uncle Sam' has such a formidable fieet in Pacific waters may have a quieting effect upon the nerves of some of the Japanese jingoes, who are said to be trying to nag the Mikado intomaking war upon this country. Uncle Sun doesn't want to fight Japan or any other nation, but it is not amiss to let folks that he is ready, in the event that the necessity should arise. - The Los Angeles physician who lias demonstrated that a human being can subsist apon cactus might have obtained ample proof of that fact by coming to this sec tion or investigating the subject in Mexico. It is a well .known fact that the tuna, or fruit of the prickly pear cactus, is not only edible, but is very much esteemed as an article of diet by the Mex icans, and tuna paste is regularly sold by the idulce vendors of that country and along the border in ICexas as well as others of the Mex ican frohtier'statesv The leaf of the cactus is'alsofeaten extensively by the Mexicans, the tender new shoots being naturally the best and most sought. During lent this cactus leaf forms a regular article of their diet, and is sold in the inarket at Brownsville,, being pre pared for sale' by removing the outer skiu and chopping the in terior parf into small pieces. ' It is considered both nutritious and palatable. Notice. Five car loads of immigrants' belongings, including household goods, cows, horses, etc., arrived at San Benito a few days ago, so The Herald learns from A, B. Cole of that place, who is in town today. This looks like business for the new town. A new addition to the immigra tibn inspectors' force in this dis trict is Chas. B. Comings, of Ma lone, N. Y., who will bestatioue'd at Santa Maria. Mr. Comings arrived last night, but will remain a week at Brownsville before pro ceeding to Santa1 Maria. . J. C. Mitchell of Temple, Texas, is a euest of his friends. Mr. and Mrs.jLee 'Hallam of Brownsville. Mr. Mitchell is the manager of the ice and cold storage plant at Tem ple, and is taking a Vacation while the cool weather relieves the pres sure in the ice business. He is charmed with. Brownsville, both country and climate. Yesterday Mr. Hallanv took his guest up to Run, Hidalgo county, in his auto, spending a few hours there and re turning to townlist evening. While on the subject of improv ing the city market. The Herald would respectfully suggest that it be improved by building a new, one. The way the present build inff is constructed; it is almost im possible for it to be properly screen ed, and it need-hardly be said, in this day of enlightment, ' that it is imperative that a market house be screened from flies. A new mar ket would not cost much more than the repairs and additions on the old building, according to the con templated plans. A difficulty between a party . of automobilists going up the river road a few days ago and some Mex icans who threw stones at the par ty, resulted in complaints before Justice of the Peace Gavito yester day afternoon by the Mexicans. The latter claim to be citizens of Mexico, and as such enlisted Con sul Barracan in their behalf. A large number of witnesses appear ed in, the case. Notice. In an effort to prove that thorn? less cactus .as an article of dietf contains properties sufficient to en able a man to continue working eighteen hours a day, Dr. Leon Albert Landon, of Los Angelo?? Cal., a welflcnown scientific IectuiS er, has been since November 29th subsisting exclusively upon cactus, suppleniented'by a few nuts and a small 5 Ijuatitity of celery. The leaves of the plant were eaten green or fried, and the fruit was eaten raw or cooked. Dr. Landon gave a dinner Satur day night to six physicians of Los Angeles to celebrate the fourteenth day of his subsistence upon the new diet. During this period he ate almost exclusively spineless cactus and cactus was one of the chief factors at the dinner. The menu consist ed of celery-cactus soup, omelette with chopped cactus and green peppers, fried cactus, salad made of cactus fruit, lettuce, celery, sher bet flavored with fruit of cactus and'the juice of the cactus fruit as drink. The guests expressed them selves delighted with the menu and said it was verv pleasant to the taste. "My experimental diet in a way was productive of surprises," said Dr. Landon. "I had expected to lose fully ten pounds in weight, though' I confidently expected to keep up my strength. Not only did my strength continue unim paired, but on weighing myself thi morning I found I had gained a half pound." Legend of the Violet. A Latin poem of the sixteenth century has a pretty legend of a- violet that, in mythological days, was a maiden called Ianthis, one of Diana's nymphs. She attracted the attention of Apollo, whose ad miration Lshe did not return, and, flying from his pursuit, she im plored Diana to destroy the beauty which occasioned , her so much trouble. Diana granted her re quest, and turned her face to & dull purple. Ianthjs, however, soon regretted the loss of her beauty and was pining away with grief, when the goddess had pity on her and changed her into a flower, which still shrinks from Apollo (the sun) arid hides her modest head in the shade.
