Newspapers index to Town. Editor Herald, - ' ------ Brownsville, Texas. Dear Sir: I am expecting, to lo cate in your city at some tuture date, and, as newspapers are an index to a town, please send me a copy of .The.HeralDj so (hat I can see wnat sort or Dusiness town Brownsville is. Very truly yours, J. B. Gaston. The above is a fair sample of numerous communications or a similar nature being constantly .re ceived by the publisher of The Herald. This particular letter is published to show merchants of Brownsville that there is more than one reason why they should adver tise their business in the local pa per. The principal reason, to be sure, snoum oe to increase tneir trade, but they should also take sufficient pride in their town to want their local paper to make the best possible showing for it, which can only be done by publishing ad vertisements of the leading busi ness houses. A glance through the advertising columns of The HeraldwiII give some idea of the impression which the writer of the above communi cation will receive on looking over the sample copy of the paper which has been sent him. Most lines of business in the town are liberally represented in the -paper, but it must be (admitted that our dry goods merchants make a very sor ry showing, and appear sadly lack ing in enterprise, judged by the columns of their local paper, only two or three investing in space in the paper to let people know that they are doing business here, while of the hotels, not a single one has a card in The Daily Herald, and. if it were not for the free advertising eiven them by the publication of the hotel arrivals in the paper, out of town readers might think that Brownsville had no hotels at all. Isn't it about time for those busi ness houses of Brownsville who have, heretofore refused to adver tise to begin to think of how lack ing in enterprise and illiberal they appear by refusing to do so?
