International field Trials May Come to San Antonio Next Time- San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 17. "Western xbred dogs," declares Curtis Wright of Carthage, Mis souri, a retired "capitalist and ardent sportsman, recently judge of the Lone Star Field Club's meet held near this city, "have won highest honors in all of the meets this winter, and this has turned the eyes of the East towards our dogs. The result will be no doubt that the next International field trials meet will be held west of the Mississippi, and. no better place could be found for it than near San Antonio where there is abun dance of birds, a fine open country and bracing sunny winterl weather not too cold to be out of doors." Plans are on foot among local capitalists to make this city the mecca of dog fanciers, by the or ganization of a stock company and the purchase of a big ranch as a quail preserve. Nearly every State has a field trial'e club and the in terstate meet is an event of nat ional interest and importance. Efforts will be made to unite the Western sportsmen and breeders to secure this meet for the West or Southwest and San Antonio will be a lively -competitor for the honor. Editor Called it Blank. The poet's lip curled scornfully. "But this isn't blank verse,' he explained. "Blank verse has no rhyme in it, whereas here rhyme isrife. 'Mirky turkey,' 'pumpkin bumpkin,' 'frolic colic' don't you see?' ' The editor, however, still insist ed upon declining the manuscript "I called it blank verse," he said, "to spare your feelings. It was a much stronger word, really, that I had in mind." Louisville Courier-Journal. Land Transfers. STATE-WIDE PROHIBITION Move Organized for Campaign In Texas. Already J54 Local Option Counties In the State Issue Is a Live One and Likely to f Cause a Bitter Contest. Special to Th Herald. San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 17. State-wide prohibition for Texas is the slogan of an organized move ment in the Northern and Eastern sections of the State that is deter mined to force this issue upon the people of the state at the earliest possible moment. Alreadyone hun dred and fifty-four counties of this State are dry under the existing local option law, and but seventy remain wet. The prohibition move ment is carefully organized and is prosecuted with vigor. It is said, in case the Governor calls a special session of the Legislature to enact a law guaranteeing bank deposits in State banks, that theprohil i iou fight will be forced upon the Leg islature. West and Southwest Tex as is strongly anti-prohibition, be ing largely German in its popula tion. In this section are the big breweries of the State, whoaieof course opposed to prohibition. No whiskey is made in Texas, but there is great hostility between the brewers aud the representatives of out-of-state distillers. These latter, the brewers charge, are aiding the cause of prohibition secretly, be cause whiskey is always sold sur reptitiously in prohibition commu nities, but never beer. The issue is a live one and is likely to be bitter ly contested in Texas in the next eighteen months. WHAT AN INCH OF RAIN MEANS. Seventy-Eight Tons of Water Falls on an Acre in Area. Following are the observations takea at the South Texas Gardeu for the 24 hours ending: at eight o'clock a. m. ou the day named: TEMPERATURE. Maximum", 52; minimum, 39". i PORECAST. Tonight, fair and warmer. jrday, partly cloudy, warmer. Commenting on the abundance of rainfall along the Texas coast this year, which is coveted by the farmers in otfier parts of Texas, Dr. E. Bunnemeyer, director of the Galveston section of the weather bureau, explains the significance of an inch of rain, as follows: "Few persons realize," he said, "that an inch of rain means seventy-eight "tons of water to the acre, or 19,540 gallons. This sounds unreasonable when you know that a single downpour might mean three or four inches. The annual rainfall of more than forty inches for Galveston being nearly 80,000 gallons to the acre, means a great deal of water, but people should know that a great deal of water is necessary to any kind of soil, for it is the rain water that goes up into the plants and makes the leaves grow and the flowers bloom. For lack of rain in many parts of the country the rivers are being tapped, and many of these rivers, fed only by the rains, are apparently gradually growing smal ler. Along the coast ot Texas, however, there is plenty of rain. "I have been asked a great many times how the fall of rain can be accurately registered. We have a rain gauge on top of the weather building, which is a cylindrical vessel twelve inches in diameter, with a funnel arrangement at the top. The water runs into a tiny cup that holds a hundredth part of an inch, and when this is full it tips over, touching a wire that is con nected with our office. Beneath the vessel in which the rain is caught there is another cylinder receptacle. an inch in diameter, holding ten inches of water, and this instru ment shows to the smallest part of an inch how much rain fell."
