The Brownsville country can -produce the truck all right and is doing so right along, but dishon est commission merchants in some -cities to which the crops have 3ieen shipped to market have given some of the growers more trouble than any number of insect pests mitrht have eiven them. The 3ettuce growers in this section in particular have cause for complaint against this species of pest Some of the finest lettuce ever seen was raised iu this vicinity, and especially around the enter prising little town of Olmito, but , wing to the dishonesty of the commission men to whom some of this truck was shipped, a great part of it brought no returns -whatever. It was not only fine, choice, crisp lettuce, bnt there "were large quantities of it, which, efore it was shipped, was ap praised at a value of several hun ired dollars per acre. This fact is attested by all who saw the let ce. And yet, some of the 3 were received no returns what- orerV" They did not even attempt ts ship any more of the crop, ssfter the first few car-loads had :gone to market. There is no ioubt in the minds of the shippers that they have been buncoed. There is no better truck land sanywbere than that on which this ery lettuce was grown. It is some of the richest and finest al Invial land that can be had ill this Sertile valley. And the crops laised were undoubtedly the finest and the yield simply enormous, fiat the growers failed to make connections with the jight men to jsarket their crops. The growers will probably profit &y- their unfortunate experience of 3i spring, and use some concert ed measures Xo market their products to advantage. There is sinch to be done in the truck bus iness, in order to make a success f it, besides raising the crops. First comes skilful packing and shipping, then the markets should se studied carefully, and the pro jects o timed as to reach the market! when the demand is best, then honest and reliable as vrell as experienced men must be secured to market them. Mr. Sein is general secretary of the National Association of Sun day Schools of Mexico. He has been here for the past week hold ing a conference with the Mexican Sunday Schools of Brownsville and Matamoros. He is an able speaker and those who have heard the va rious addresses delivered by him in Matamoros and Brownsville have found them both interesting and helpful. Mad Dog Killed. Between seven and eight o'clock this morning there was no little ex citement created in the western end of town by the appearance on the streeets of a mad dog. This dog was seen snapping at other dogs on the streets and also tryiug to bite horses and cattle in a subur ban settlement of Mexicans which attracted quite a crowd of the in habitants of that part of the town. Finally some one in the crowd went after a pistol and ended the dog's life dv putting a bullet through its head. Fortunately no one was bitten by this rabid dog. It would be a erood idea for people to keep their canines closely at home during the coming hot days. And that reminds one that there is a dog ordinance ornamenting the city statute books which should be enforced. l San Benito Sittings To The Herald. San Benito, Texas, April 9.
