After an outlay of between $400,000 and $500,000 in a vain endeavor to con trol the burning oil well, Pearson & Sons have decided to abandon the wells altogether. After the Pearsons had just finished a dam costing $100, 000 to hold back the oil. the ground 'underneath caved in and the dam disappeared. Four acres have been taken by the crater so far and it is enlarging daily. It is flowing at the rate of 10,000,000 gallons a day, ac cording to an estimate. Millions of dollars' worth of oil has been lost, two men have been suffocated by the noxious gases, and fifty soldiers used in fighting the fire and later to build embankments to impound the oil are in the hospital as a result of pois onous gases. Vegetation for miles around has been destroyed and many inhabitantof the region are suffering from swollen eyes. There is no in dication that the oil will stop flowing or the crater cease growing. No bot tom to the crater has been discovered.
