Being Remodeled. The building on Eleventh Street formerly occupied by the Telephone Exchange, but which has recently been leased by the management of the Chicago Cafe, who will open in it a first class cafe and hotel, is now being thoroughly renovated and remodeled. Sealed bids for building a new city slaughter house, to be built on the site of what is known as the Grave Yard Resaca, will be received by the city council up to and until Monday, November 30th, at 2 p. m. Secretary Ma gill of the .Lower Rio Grande Valley Commercial Club says that while he appreciates highly Mr. Hammond's expression -of appreciation in Satur day's Herald, he could not possibly nave accomplished the results ob tained at Corpus Christi without the most energetic and enthusiastic sup port or the livest bunch of live wires it-was ever the honor of a secretary to work with. Ho expresses his heartfelt gratitude to every membor Of the delegation. Excellent Performance. Last night at the Electric theater a very fine production from the well known story of Damon and Pythias was giv en to a large and appreciative au dience. This was anr extra long pic ture, being in two rolls, and it was also one of the best pictures seen here this season. A good programme was also given at the Celford theater, the picture entitled "Blue Bird" was very pretty, being hand-colored. The fam ous "Salome Dance" was also good, and rather startling. , Ball Gam Tomorrow. A game of baseball is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon at the Baseball Park between the regular Brownsville team and "Brant's Gobblers." This promises to be a close and interesting game as it is well known to all that .the regular team is comnosed of some of the best amatpur ball players in Texas. While the "Gobblers" are not familiar to the city fans, yet they are composed of some of the best local talent and promise to give the regular nine all they can do, if they don't "gobble" them up completely. Wanted His Wife. Tuesday morn ing about 4 o'clock, Tsadore Garcia, a Mexican, called at the home .of Tomaso Garza, keeper of the ceme tery, who lives near the cemetry, and begun hammering on the door, de manding admittance stating that he wanted his wife, who was staying at the home of Garza. The wife of Garza went to the door and remon strated with Ysadoro for creating a disturbance, whereupon be hit her in the right eye with his fist, com pletely closing that optic. Garza seeing Ysadoro hit his wife, imme diately seized a club and struck Ysa doro a stunning blow on the fore head, causing that belligerent gentle man to reflect that the ways of the transgressor are hard and that dls gbun hammering on the door, de after the convincing "argument" of Garcia he immediately fled from the scene. In the police court Ysadoro was fined $3 and trimmings. Tourist Car Arrives. Last night a tourist car belonging to Burton D. Hud of Bay City arrived in the city attached to the regular passenger train, in charge of J. B. Brashfield of Bay City and with 18 homeseekers aboard. This car left Chicago on Tuesday, November 17, making its first stop at Blessing, where it re mained for four days, and coming direct here. The members of the party are principally from Iowa, Kan sas, Missouri and Illinois. The car will leave tomorrow on its return trip north. Great Success. The grand opening sale of the Combe tract adjoining the town of San Benito, extensively ad vertised in the issues of The Herald of last Friday and Saturday, was a great success, reports Frank Cald well who was In the city yesterday. On Monday, the opening day of the sale, $20,000 worth of land out of this tract was sold, the deals being Closed, that day. Mr. Caldwell states that S. A. Robertson, who conducted the sales, was very much pleased and gratified with the results obtained through his adertisement in The Herald. New Firm. S. H. Selma and S. K Miller of Corpus Christi have arrived in the city and will engage in business here, having secured the rear of the bulding occupied by Conway & Hoit as an office. These two young gentle men will be received with open arms by all lovers of baseball as they have already consented to become members of the famous Brownsville nine and have offered their services gratis. Mr. Selma, whose, home Is in Houston was the star pitcher for the Corpus Christi aggregation, while Mr. Miller was one of the best twirlers in the Gulf Coast League, last season. Jury of View. L. H. Hailam, B D. Newman, Geo, M. Pptegnat, Joe Celaya and E. H. Goodrich have qua! ified as a jury of view to lay out a road from the townsite of Laguna Vista, situated upon the shore of La guna Madre, to the tqwnsite of Bar redo, situated upon the St. L. B. & M, Railroad. The members cbmposing this jury of view were appointed at a recent meeting of the county commis sioners. They will go over the pro posed road with County Surveyor A W. Amthor at an early date and re port as to the feasibility of the road at the next meeting of the county commissioners. Delightful Musical. A delightful musical was given at the San Carlos last night by Mr. and Mis. Geo. Beard, who have the management of that popular hotel. Quite a number of people from the city were present besides the large number of hotel guests. Delightfud music on the auto-piano was rendered by Mr. C. E. Oliver of Houston, while Mrs. OH ver entertained the guests with sev eral selections on the piano. Mrs. Oliver is quite a noted pianist and has but few equals in the State. A vocal solo by Mrs- Gilhousen was greatly enjoyed by all and won much applause for this talented and charm lng laay. Mr. Jack Briggs of Hous ton well merited the applause he re ceived on his rendition of two very beautiful bass solos. The vocal duet by Mr. and Mrs. Gilhousen was thoroughly enjoyed by all as were the two vocal solos by Mr. C. E. Oliver. For refreshments delicious punch, such as the hostess only knows how to make, was served. All who were present enjoyed a most pleasant evening. HERALD WANT ADS For Kent.
