A publication which js doubtless
destined to do a great work in pro
moting the development of this valley
of vast possibilities is "The Lower
Rio Grande Valley." This is the ap
propriate title of the handsome book,
let just issued by the Lower' Rio
Grande Valley Commercial Club. As
a literary work the booklet is all that
could be asked. In language neces
sarily concise, on account of limited
space, yet chosen with rare discrimin
ination and- judgment, the main facts
relative to the valley, its varied re-
, sources of soil and climate, the wide
opportunities which it offers to liome-
- seekers or other investors.its present
substantial development and its great
future, are set forth. Especially deserving-
of praise is the artistic work
shown in tl3 illustrations. These
include twenty-five full page half
tone engravings, besides the four
pagesof the beautifully designed
cover. Views or various places of in
terest throughout the valley and its
great staple field and garden products
make excellent showing. The beau
tiful palm grove pictured on the front
cover, the stately date trees laden
with fruit, roses, of rare beauty, the
fresh vegetable display from the
Brownsville midwinter exhibit, fields
of broom corn, onions, cabbage, cauli
flower, cotton, corn peanuts and al
falfa, banana groves, sugar-cane plan
tations orange orchards, vineyards
showing vines of a year's growth ,
bearing grapes and fig trees of the' K"m Soon. Among the

The progressive little city of Ilar
iingen is- enjoying the benefits of a
local telephone exchange, which was
installed recently by the Brownsville
Telephone Company. The system al
ready has 20 subscribers and is grow
ing in popularity. Mrs. W. F. Hoff
man presides over tne new Harnn
gen system as "Central."
The Brownsville Telephone Coni'
pany is also putting in a second long
distance copper wire circuit between
here and Harlingen, the present cir
cuit being entirely inadequate to
handle thbusiness up the line., Man
ager Stegman of the telephone com
pany, in speaking of the Harlingen
exchange, said the company had
found it necessary ,to have an ex
change at that point, even though it
was not strictly a paying proposition'
just now. The necessity arising on
account of the long distance service,
which has grown to such proportions
north of here along the main line of
the St. L., B. & M., road and on the
Hidalgo branch as to require an in
termediate station. ' .
