He lived to the ripe age of eighty-two, dying in the picturesque old city of his berth, which still pre- j serves with jealous care the house of i Hans Sach, in the street named fori the poet. It was decided that Hans should follow his father's calling, tfcr.t of a shoemaker, but he was first careful ly educated at the Latin school of the city. He then began to learn his trade. A trade meant something of im portance in those days, when the guilds or labor organizations were supreme powers in civil affairs. , One of the chief features that count ed. largely in the connection of learn ing a trade was what was called the wanderjahre." A young man must perfect himself in his preparation to announce himself ready for pa'tron age by going to work in many cities, learning methods and customs and broadening himself in thought and experience. Hans worked at what he called his "craft" in Katisbon. Passau, Salz burg, l.eipsic, Lmbec and Osana-brm-k. Then he came back to Nu remberg and spent the rest of his das as a shoemaker making litera ture his pastime ami real joy in life. He married when he was 25 and t'iis first ife having died, he mar ried again in 1561. Both wives bore him children, so he had a large fam ilv, but he supported them in the careful well-regulated German home liie that is full of simple and far reaching infuence. It is claimed for Hans Sach that he founded in Germany the school of tragedy as well ns comedy. The. great poet. Goethe, repeatedly said that he got the outline of his ' Faust" from Sachs and the idea of many of his other works from the same 1 source. The largest funeral corteg" seen i Ilrownsvil'e for many years was that which accompanied the mortal remains of Santos Valdez, t.ie late tii. collector and assessor for the City of Brownsville for a period of 24 years to the cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral service was conducted by the Caholii church by Rev. Father Hugnard. The process-on which followed the remains from the church to the cemetery was about six or seven blocks in length and included at least six or seven jitindred people. At the cemetery the I;. -rial services ! conducted by the Mexiran of fun gave an added charm to it. There came a time, some 300 years ago; when German writers abandoned the tradi'ions of the early singers anil began to copy the style of for eign writers. Thus it happened that there was a period in which Sachs was almost unread, even in his own city. It was. in trnth, Goethe who awakened afresli the interest in this, admirable poet. And he is now fa miliar to ail readers who enjoy and appreciate poetic genius and expression. in C iC TELEPHONE ason i ransrer u. m " i i ' t irraniini i I in iiiiiiiniiii hum iiiin 1 1 i f SiaVKIIAGK COM TAX V. i .'i.'iiilifK .if Honor assisted bv the ( nidos Lib res Obreros, .Mr Valdez taviug been a member of both so fteties for many years.
