A somewhat novel and sensational case was tried here Friday in the Circuit Court. Miss Lottie Waring, a young lady, aged seventeen, brought suit in the name of her father, as next friend, against Mrs. Minnie D. McLean, a married lady, for'slander, claiming damages in the sum of $10,000. A number of witnesses, chiefly ladies, beside others, friends and sympa thizers of the parlies, were present in court during the trial. Some time was spent in selecting a jury which being completed, the court ordered the room cleared of all persons, not officers of the court, and not personally interested, either as parties or witnesses. When all the witnesses for plaintiff had de livered their testimony further proceedings were arrested by a motion by defendant to exclude the plaintiffs testimony and for non suit, which was ably supported by argumcul and the citation of authori ties bearing upon the case. This motion having been overruled by the Court, the case was ordered to proceed, mid at 4 o'clock, the case being closed, the' argument to the jury wr.s opened by Moyse Wilkin son, fur plaintiff, followed by D C. Braiulett and F. A. McLain for de fendant, aiid E. II. Ratcliff closing Tor plaintiff. Tho speeches were all able, earnest and impressive, and at 6 o'clock the jury retired for consultation. At 9 o'clock the jury returned into court with a verdict in favor of plaintiff, and assessed her damages at $."00. The case was warmly contested from beginning to end, and as the verdict is disap .pointing to defendant ns well as counsel, the probabilities are that it will bt appealed to the Supreme Court for revision and final action. The case of Sain Johnson vs. the L., X. 0. & T. R. R., for killing a cow, came up for hearing Tuesday afternoon. The R. R. Co. only had one witness, Mr. O.X. Harbin The Paintiff had several. The case was ally argued on both sides and given to the jury. After being out about 4.j minutes a verdict was rendered for defendant. Xat Anders, who was inflicted a year ago for manslaughter, having killed with a knife a son f Monroe Whittington, September orevious. was tried on Tuesday morning last. He was about 18 years of age, and the boy he killed about the same. Ratcliff & ilkinson were attorney for defense Mr. Anders was nc quitted On Tuesday last the cane of Geo. Flinches, who with Wm. Taplin was indicted for the murder of Robert Green on the' 10th of April, 1892, enme op for hearing, and the State thinking they could not make out a case, the court ordered prose cution to cease. At the suggestion of Congressman Stockdale, Mr. XV. F. Love has made application to be appointed as Consul at Dublin, Ireland. His recommendation has been indorsed by a great number of prominent men, and he stands a fair chance of appointment. He is a deserving man and we hope to see him win.
