J..V.V, l'tibllhf- Piatt Foliate For Effect Bi Winter And Soner Taking the United States as a wliole the average time that de ciduous plants are without foli age is at least five months. During this period the farm home is occupied as continuous ly as in summer, and the sur roundings should be as attrac tive as possible, says landscape gardeneis of the United States Department of Agriculture. Evergreen shrubs, both conif erous and broad leaved, maintain a color throughout the winter not otherwise obtained. Used in moderation, they arc a dis tinct addition at this season. On the other hand, many deciduous shrubs have attractive winter characters, the most striking being those bearing bright-colored berries. Then there are barks of many shades as brown and gray, with some of bright red, green, and yellow, and if properly arranged make pleas ing contrasts and add to the winter beauty. The short blooming period of the average shrub makes Mowers the least important of the bar actors to be considered. In spite of this the color, character, and time of blooming should be con sidered as well as the behavior of the dying llowers, whether or not they fade to a conspicuous and undesirable color and hang on unduly or pass away without a distinctly unsightly stage. . Moth gave their lives not only to letters but to affairs, and both were honest and high-minded. Johnson wrote "literary English," reson ant, sonorous, even-llowing, in long antithetical sentences. Franklin wrote in the language of the people familiar words and short, immediate, homely sentences. Today Johnson is known chielly because he is the subject of the greatest biogra phy ever written, but Franklin is studied as a master of forcible living English. W. V. Wu.nijit udy G. M. UUThEDQE is Ways To PrdTsnt Just now is a good time to look out for pneumonia, juvord ingtoDr. M. P. Kavenel f the School of Medicine of the Uni versity of Missouri, president of the American Public Health As sociation. Pneumonia', or in- llamation of the lungs, is a dis ease of the winter months. It is seen in two forms: One call ed lobar, in which large portions of the lungs become oliditied, and the other called broncho pneumonia, in which smaller areas widely spread through the lungs are affected. The former is seen most commonly in adults; the latter, in children and old persons. Pneumonia frequently follows other diseases, especial ly measles and inlluenza, and is a frequent cause of death in these diseases. During 1015 pneumonia caused 7,5530 deaths in Missouri, while tuberculosis killed only 4.."S7. The inlluenza epidemic increased the death rate above that usually seen. Vaccines to prevent pneumonia were iried in some camps during the war with ap parent success, and the study is being continued. A thoroughly successful vaccine would be a great boon, but the matter is still in the experimental stage. Apart from vaccines, the best measures of prevention are those directed to keeping the body in good condition. Avoid over-eating, excessive fatigue, poorly ventilated rooms (espec ially sleeping apartments'), and indoor crowds. A daily cold bath keeps the skin in good con dition and prevents over-sensitiveness to cold. Heavy cloth ing and that which constricts thd circulation should also be avoided. During epidemics of diseases which pre-diapose to pneumonia, it is especially important to avoid crowds, and particularly those indoors. Avoid coughing and sneezing persons. Do not allow thorn to cougli -or sneeze m your face. Persons who would not think of spitting in one's face do not hes itate to sneeze and cough with out protecting the mouth and nose with a handkerchief. Coughs and sneezes break up the spit into a line spray, which is just as objectionable as, and more dangerous than masses of spit. Do not let others spit on you, and do not spit on others. C. A.
