Uako Meages to Iulti-li Admiral Al
lowed (ioeben and Ilrrlau to
INeajK'' to DanlencUes.
NEW YORK, Dec. L The Gorman
cruisers Uoeben a:d U.reslau escaped
from the British fieet in the Mediter
ranean at tile beginning of the war
by the use of the secret naval cods
which a German spy had stolen from
the lritish admiralty, according to a
circumstantial report receixed by mail
fiom London Tuesday. The corre
spondent who S'-nds this story says
that it comes from un authoritatUe
source, but that the censor has nat
pctmitted its publication in Great
Britain.
The facts in the ease, say.s the cor
r spondent. became known at the
court martial of Admiral Trouhridge
for allowing the Herman warships to
elude him. Admiral Troubridge
thought he had the cruisers securely
bottled up in Messina harbor. ,n
the morning-of Aug. he re- eived a
tireless nussage in the 1-ritisa :id
ndraltys secret code, worded and
sirned in regulation admiralty form,
ordering him to permit the Goeben
and Hre.Viau to escape. Assuming
that the admiralty knew its I uum s
and that it hud other'plans for th
eatdure of the cruisers, lie permitted
them to leave the harbor. As is well
known the ships got away without
molestation and escaped to the Par
dar.elles. where thry were purchase J
by Turkey.
Admiral Trout-rid ue was called
home in disgrace. Not until he reach
ed I'nglund did he know that no such
ir.f age as the one ordering him to
let the Goeben and l'reslau to get
away had been sent by the admt.'ilty.
(hi the strength of the evidence in the
case h was acquitted.
The message evidently had been
sent either by the Goeben herself or
by Mome German wireless station.
The code had been changed only a
week before. It could havo come in
possession of the Germans only
through a spy or a traitor high up in
the navy.
