The general summed up the phy ical conditions of the battleground which made the strudle particular ly trying on the troops. First, he Mid. there was that terrible strain of endurance and natural fatigue accompanying nights and days of ceai-ele Jihtin? with the relent less foe. Then there was the ex treme cold, with the temperature at night.? at about 14 decrees above zero, fahrenheit. This extreme cold was made worse, he said, because the men were without any kind of shelter, everything having been swept away in the terrific artillery action and the constant uhlftinp of position. There were no trenches, or dug out . which ordinarily give some .heiter and there was no water from unfailing sources, such as the sol diers should have when going through such an ordeal. They were on the barren ground of foothills covered with rocks and stones. Th ground wa without habitation or the slightest natural facilities usual ly required by lighting; troops. Toll Army Officers Heavy. After summing up the physical hardships the general added tnat there was the still more serious condition of many command.- being with very few officers as the con tinuous lighting had told terribly on officers. As a result new men were suddenly called upon to lead large forces far beyond their experience and sub-officers as well aa junior officers were directing superior commands in many instances. The general raid there have been fearful losses among the troops which required a constant reform ing of companies, regiments, bri gades and divisions. Rut with all these terrible conditions, the gen eral said the spirit of the men was unabated in the determination to hold at any cost. The rumble of heavy artillery fire continued throughout the general's talk, while a dense mist overhead gave a faint outline of the rising hills, where one attack was follow ing another in this fateful lattle.
