After an hour and a quarter of the greatest wrestling battle that has ever been seen in Mishawaka, the 1 out last night between Joey Smith of Chicago, former light weight champion of America, and Sam Tunda, Mishawaka light weight, was called a draw by Iteferee L'rnest P.eehe. Hoth men are as clever as will be found in the game, the former having tdightly the better of his opponent in science and training, although Tundas evened matters with a shade more strength and weight. The two ath letes wrestled to a draw in Chicago recently, and several months ago in Mishawaka Smith won the honors on a toe hold. The affair was held in the Cen tury theater and was given by the Hogans. a local organization form ed since the start of the war for the purpose of providing the Mish awaka boys in training camps with tohacco and smokes. Core Issues Challenge. TJefore the match was finished. Tom Gore, local mat artist, issued a challenge through The News Times to the winner of last night's match. As the match was'a draw, it is presumed that Gore's chal lenge will stand for either Smith or Tundas. ' An interesting wrestling match was staged as one of the prelim inaries by Carl Haney, Swiss welter weight champion, and Young Greek of Mishawaka. The latter secured the first fall in P6 minutes and Ilaney took the next two In eight minutes each, winning the bout. Stage Iloilns; Inhibition. A fast boxing exhibition was cien by Chan Moore of Klkhart and Clarence Willard of Toledo. O. The go was six 2-minute rounds in which the boys mixed it freely, greatly pleasing the audience. Mr. Rord ner spoke on "Gardening." In th course of his remarks he impressed upon Iiis audience these two facts: "It is important to grow all the foods needed for home consumption in the community as transporta'tio.i is so congested that the shipping of perishable foods is entirely out of the question. It is also important to prepare the garden spot thor oughly, fertilize well and plant tha staples which can be canned and stored away for the winter. It U quite evident that the production of food will be probably norma!, on account of the shortage in labor and the difficulty of getting men to work on the farms to take the place of those already gone to th" ranks." He further stated that the best way one can convert all of his surplus energy, and assist in win ning the war, is tor get Into th game, get busy, and not only do his bit, but a larger part. ROME, Saturday, March 1. Ex planation -was given today at the office of the papal secretary of state of the report that Pope Benedict was attempting to induce the bel ligerents to cease the air raids upon cities. Monsignor Ccrretti. assistant papal secretary of state, said: "The holy father has frequently condemned such acts by whomso ever committed, having at various times paved the way to a join agreement on this subject, but both belligerents apparently have so far been unable to discover means fm limiting bombardments to the war zones. On one hand the Austro Germans i:ae claimed that air raid were of direct value in that they lowered the morale of cities whic'i were attacked. On the other hand the allies insist on reprisals, als attacking military factories and warehouses near open cities." Monsignor Cerretti stated that the holy father is daily engaged in studying means of ending the war, or at least limiting its horrors, but so far has not found arguments powerful enough to influence the belligerents to cease air raiding.
