Friday nizht's din"i to be Kiven by the home suard for the benefit of that organization and the local chapter of the Red Cross promises to re as success ful an undertaking as was the last event of the kind friven by the guards. Owin;? to pome of the ticket sellers failing to thoroughly ex plain the matter, several ticket holders sot a wron? impression as to the motive of the dance. However, a deputation from th organization called at The News Times Wednesday mornint? and cleared up the misunderstanding most satisfactorily. While it had been understood In some quarters that the guards were in a sound financial condi tion, it would appear that this is not so. The battalion has to fur nish its own uniforms, rifles, etc., as well as maintain the armo.y ari other equipment, and this hns taken about every cent it has in its treasury. The public has not been made familiar with this before, hence the misunder standing. It has al.-o bef-n pointed out that the hanolin of the fund of the guards is in the han'ds of civilian committee which at tends to all disbursements, this committee heinp in no way con nected with the organization ex cepting In an advisory capacity. The local chapter of the Red Cross will have charge of the re freshments Fr'day night and will derive the benefit of all profits; from this source. Outside a few subscriptions, the home guards have only this means by which to maintain the organization, and the public has been most liberal in its put chase of tickets for the forthcoming social affair. arilivi ovi:nsi;.s. The best variety for canning is the Detroit. Sort, the beets, putting uniform sizes together. Cut the stems off. but be careful not to cut off too closely or break the root. This will cautse loss of juice, color and tlavor. Boil in an enameled pan until three fourths done, peel, pack hot in lay ers in previously boiled jars, fitting the second layer into the spaces left by the fir?t layer and repeating. Cover with clear hot water; par tially seal the jars and boil them in a water bath for one hour continu ously, counting from the time the water boils again around the jars. Do not allow cold water to touch the beets after they have been cooked. If beets are packed in tin the cans used must be inside lacquered. Keetti 1 1-2 inch in dia meter and over should be cut or sliced before packing into jars. When a steam-pressure tanner is usvd. process pints ."0 minutes un der tive pounds steam pressure. t. S.
